Along our descent from Mount Teneriffe, we had the opportunity to also visit Mount Si. Having made a pilgrimage to the Haystack by way of the Mount Teneriffe Road Trail (MTRT) last year, I could not resist a side trip along the spur trail, about 0.75 miles. The spur trail is marked fairly clearly with a pink ribbon and a green ribbon, taking off from the west side of the MTRT. The spur trail is not regularly maintained, but it is relatively easy to traverse, gaining approximately 400 feet. There was snow in places, and due to the cloud cover, visibility was limited, lending a mysterious feel to the journey. We did not see the Haystack until we passed through a grove and reached the point where the spur trail joins the new Mount Si trail. We did not see another human being there (at about 4:30 pm) and turned back. The side trip took about 50 minutes.
