Snow on trail
Summit of Ruth - see climber's routes.
Hiked/climbed up to Mount Ruth on this beautiful Monday. Snow begins in earnest at about 4800'. If you plan to stay on the trail up to glacier basin, you do not need boots. To go off trail, as I did, I would recommend snowshoes until it gets too steep, and then kickstepping does the trick. This climb is a buttbuster but completely worth the grueling effort!

Encountered a bear as soon as the glacier basin trail escapes the forest. I believe it was at about 4700'. I was looking down and looked up to see him just 30' away! Luckily he was preoccupied, looked at me, and kept chomping on whatever he was eating!
Mt Ruth in middle of photo. Looks daunting, but isn't too bad.
Little T. The sound of rockfall was constant on this hot day.

Red Top Lookout

Snoqualmie Pass

Whether you're camping near Cle Elum or just want a prime picnic location for a short Saturday hike, you'll only have to climb a mile on this steep, easy-to-follow trail to get stunning views from a fire lookout (and cool alpine outhouse). It can be great for kids, but keep them close on the exposed summit.
