Hike: Diablo Lake
Region: North Cascades -- North Cascades Highway
Avg Rating: 3.40
Sourdough Creek near the Diablo Lake trailhead was the most interesting item on that trail.
It was cloudy, so I decided to hike the Diablo Lake trail from Gorge Lake. If you like hiking through Salal and ferns, you will like this hike. If you want more, hike somewhere else. Most views are obscured by trees or powerlines. The only flowers of note were some patches of Penstemon on the powerline clearing.

Sourdough Creek looked good next to the trailhead, so when I returned from the Diablo Lake trail and found a signpost for Sourdough Creek trail, I took that trail. That was also a mistake.

I camped at the Colonial Creek Campgound four miles up the Highway. After setting up camp, I hiked the Thunder Woods Nature trail on the Thunder Creek trail. This trail was much more interesting than the two trails at Gorge Lake. There are some blowdowns on this trail, but clearing them is not difficult.
There were some patches of Penstemon in the clearing beneath the powerlines.

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
