Jeff on the summit, Alpine Art
A great but muggy hike to the summit with hiking friends Jeff, Tom, Loren and Diane. The hike was designed to get us ready for Kachess Beacon which we plan to do in a few weeks.

West Tiger 3 is a good test of about 2000 feet elevation gain but on a great, wide road like trail except for the last 0.9 miles which is steep and more trail like than the rest of the route.

It took us 2 hours to get up with lots of breaks. The only heart pounding section was at the end where the route gets a bit steep and bounds up the last 600 to 700 feet quickly.

The air was warm (about 70) and humid but we all made it up in good spirits (although not as good as the runner who came singing down the trail just below where you cross the cable line trail on the final summit pitch).

Drizzle at the top sent us home but no rain or drizzle at the trail head.

Saw some butter cup and phlox in bloom.

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
