We took this hike with our three grand-daughters ages 6 to 10, and they thoroughly enjoyed the hike and canoe ride to get there. The hike was mainly on old roads and relatively flat, so it was a good hike for our kids.
The 5 3/4 mile distance is the round trip to the grove of ancient cedars. This is a great destination for kids, but much longer hikes are also available including trips to designated campgrounds. The huge cedars at the end of the trail definitely made this destination worthwhile.
This would be a great running trail. Also a great shoulder season or even mid-winter trail.
A flock of kayakers was leaving the mainland boat launch the same time we were. But other than them, we saw no body else the whole day and felt like we had the island to ourselves.
The only catch to this trail is that you need a canoe or other boat to get from the mainland to the island. But it's an easy five or ten minute paddle across the small strait. Do check the tide tables as the island landing will be muddy at low tides and the current could be strong during large tidal fluctuations.
