I biked the first 2.25 miles up the road (trail) to just past the Granite Creek Bridge, stashed by bike in the woods, and hiked the next couple of miles up to the Granite Lakes / Thompson Lake sign.
I turned left at the Granite Lakes / Thompson Lake sign and continued uphill for what seemed to be a bit over a mile to the Thompson Lake sign (see pic). The turn off for the lake (trail 1009) is very well marked.
This part of the 1009 trail does not seem to get much foot traffic but it is still very easy to follow to the lake. It is about a about 1 mile and a half to the lake. The trail appears to end at a rock scree field a couple hundred feet above the lake ... but it actually turns back into the woods and continues down to the lake shore.
It's a long day hike of about 14 miles round trip but you can probably have the lake to yourself as I don't think it gets to many visitors.
