Fresh huckleberries!
We encountered about half a dozen blowdowns of various size across the trail that had to be climbed over or scrambled under. I had two 9 year old's with me who handled it just fine, but younger kids may have to be carried over some of the taller obstacles.
It's a great trail for a sunny day hike because most of the way you'll be in sun dappled shade, and the turn around spot by the river had a nice cool breeze coming off the water, making it a pleasant stop to eat lunch and watch the American dippers streaking above the surface of the Stillaguamish.
We feasted our way along the trail on huckleberries and salmonberries, both of which were plentiful.

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
