I did this hike with my two girls (5 & 7) and my 4 month old son in his Kelty backpack. We started at the Chinook Pass parking lot. There was a ton of snow there but don't let that stop you because once you go up about 50ft there trail is free and clear for about the next mile.
Once you get into the thicker part of the woods you will encounter some snow on the trail which can be a little tricky for kids. We actually lost the trail at one point and were just following the creek until we saw some people coming down the trail about 15ft above us.
The hike is very friendly except for a few little snow sections. Once we got to the lake we ejoyed sat down and let the kids play. My girls put on their bathing suits and started playing in the water. The water was freezing but it didn't seem to bother them. There were maybe about 50 other people spread out around the lake.
We didn't encounter any bugs at all during the hike or at the lake. Highly recommend this hike. Be advised that the parking lot can be packed with people so you might have to park across the street.
