I hiked into Snow Lake in Rainier National Park yesterday. The weather was perfect. The hike seemed very popular. This is different than the past two years when I saw very few hikers. It was good to see so many enjoying the area.

There was some water on the trail. I ran into the first snow on the trail about a quarter mile from Snow Lake. You can stay on the trail by following the path many others have made through the snow.

The number of insects increased as you approached the lake. Most of them seemed to be small flies. Most of the wild flowers were just starting to bloom. Avalanche Lilies, which seemed larger than normal, were blooming all along the trail. The only wildlife was a deer that was stayed ahead of me on the trail. It was much more interested in eating than the fact that I was there.

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
