Why You Should Go Now
Ripe berries
After finding the road to Lake Elizabeth blocked, we shifted destinations and met my sister and her family at the Barclay Lake trailhead.

Note on the directions (both online and in the book): The forest road to the trailhead is 6024, not 6034, as noted. All the same, not too hard to locate.

Our nephews are 4 and 7 and they did awesome. They do not hike very frequently, and we thought that the entire trail may be too much for them. But a kid on the trail is a good thing, no matter how far you go, right?

We made it to the bridge over Barclay Creek and stopped there. The kids did awesome! My wife was in her element talking about the plants and flowers to them, pointing out different types of mushrooms and fungi, and picking huckle-, salmon-, and thimbleberries for them to sample.

Great dayhike, and look forward to going further on it in the future!

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
