View from Lunch Rock. The ice caves can be seen at the botton of the snow field.
We arrived at the trailhead early, around 7am and there were only a couple of cars parked there. Temperature was quite chilly, around 45F, even though it warmed up to mid 70s later in the day.

The trail is in great shape and it is quite a workout. For some reason it felt tougher to me than other trails with about the same distance/elevation gain (Rachel Lake, Pilchuck are some the comes to mind). My guess would be that in the other trails, the obstacles force me to keep a slower pace, while on this one the 'stairmaster' section has nothing to limit me, so i unconciously push for a faster pace. Or maybe I just did not rest well the night before....

Once we got to the lake, there was basically no one there - the only other person was someone bivouacking further down the trail. Awesome lake - really nice views, crystal clear water. We stopped at 'Lunch Rock' for a quick snack and noticed some ice caves at the other side of the lake (not too different than the ones at the Big Four Mountain). We decided to go there to check it out. There is a well defined path until the boulder field, but after that you have to find your way up. The ice caves were very interesting, but i would not recommend that to everyone - the boulder field can be tricky to navigate and walking over loose rocks is not the safest thing to do.

The weather was cloudy for most of the time, with some low clouds over us, but that added some charm to the lake. The sun came out later in the morning, right after we left back to the car. We met a lot of people of their way up and the parking lot was packed when we got to our car.

Big obstacles on the way to the ice.
This cave was probably 20 feet high. We did not get in, as the ceiling is already pretty thin.

Red Top Lookout

Snoqualmie Pass

Whether you're camping near Cle Elum or just want a prime picnic location for a short Saturday hike, you'll only have to climb a mile on this steep, easy-to-follow trail to get stunning views from a fire lookout (and cool alpine outhouse). It can be great for kids, but keep them close on the exposed summit.
