Why You Should Go Now
Fall foliage
WOW!! that all I can really say. The drive in from Seattle seemed a bit extensive but in the end WELL worth it. I will return for an overnighter. BTW I did hike with my dog but you should probably choose to leave your dog at home on this one. I will next time. I didn't see any posts at the trailhead regarding dogs but at the top dogs aren't allowed. There are goats up there!

Dogs In Alpine Lakes WiIderness

Posted by Mike at Sep 19, 2012 05:49 PM
I believe dogs are not allowed on any trails in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness above 5,000 feet which is anything North of Highway 90 and South of Highway 2 but as usual most dog owners even if they are aware of it don't care or abide by the rules anyway including being on a leash. Trails should be marked if they are not allowed on lower portions of the trail.

Dogs allowed in most of the ALW

Not true Mike -- dogs are allowed in most of the ALW, *except* for the Enchantments basin and the Lake Ingalls trail. No elevation restrictions. (http://www.wta.org/[…]/correction-on-dog-leash-rules)

The Lake Ingalls trail needs better signage about the restriction. It can be confusing because dogs are allowed on the Esmeralda Basin trail, so the restriction only begins at the fork, several hundred feet up the trail. Hopefully clearer info will improve compliance w/ the rules in this beautiful area.

Dogs on Leashes

I stand corrected based on what you showed me but I also read where it say they are band on trails in the wilderness above 5,000 feet http://www.wilderness.net/i[…]&sec=wildView&WID=8 but it definitely is confusing and in the end only the governemnet web sites are probably accurate.

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
