Magnificent hike. We were not sure why it is not a popular one.
it had everything a power hike should have, old and 2nd growth trees,
berries, wildflowers, creeks and waterfalls, meadows and a grand
mountain top view! Parts were steep but the trail is nice.
The road to turn off of from Arlington is NOT marked, and it looks like
a drive way, look for a bridge. Dirt road is rough but with only 3 miles,
it's worth it, drive slow! Also no trail head sign to speak of, look to your right and you will find it. Not a soul to be seen all day long.
Absolute heaven.
At the top. Frank Sheilds and Tango.

I think the reason it's not very popular is due to the constant gunfire, shell casings and trash from target practice.....it's like a battlefield on the weekends. Personally, I'm not comfortable leaving my car there. :(

The sign marking the road keeps getting stolen.

I've hiked this trail solo several times in the last decade or so, and have not had a problem with unsavory characters, but have met some nice people on the trail. Though recent reports indicate some skeevy people hanging around the road, that has not been my experience. Looking forward to hiking Higgins this fall; reports indicate the color is really kicking in. Lovely huge, old trees on Higgins. I like walking through the bright vegetation on the older clearcut portion, then seeing the wall of huge trees there; you immediately hit HUGE old growth.
