I had been here once before years ago and as it had been nearly 3 weeks since I had been out hiking. The cabin fever was kicking in and while the weather window was open in the lowlands the mountain forecast dreadful. Today was the perfect time for a return trip to Whistle Lake. There is no real challenge getting here as it is paved for all the way until the last few yards to reach the parking lot.
Whistle Lake is located in the Anacortes Community Forest Lands just south of town. It incorporates a large network of trails around the lake, Mt. Erie and also leads over to Heart Lake. Other than being wet and slick in places the trail all the way around the lake was in great shape. The lake was flat and serene today and the clouds were reflecting in the water. There's plenty of green scenery to look at as you make your way along with some cool fungus. Someone had spread some Christmas cheer by decorating a tree on the east side of the lake, I hope they return to remove the bulbs after the holidays. My hiking partner and I probably logged less than 3 miles today but it was nice to get out for awhile after all the gloomy weather we've had.
