North Cascades from closed hwy
After our eagle watching morning along the Skagit, we decided to drive up to the #20 road closure and walk along the highway. We saw this TH just a little ways from the road closure. It looks to be new, nice signage, a brand new ADA boardwalk and a new loo. We did the loop thru the woods, easy and short. The snow was packed down and was easy to walk with sturdy shoes. The walkway just loops by a small stream. Not much of a walk, but pretty in the snow. We then walked along the closed highway for a mile or so. The snow was packed down from skiers and snowmachines, so we did not need snowshoes (which we hadn't brought anyway). It was quiet today and it was nice to enjoy the views at a slower pace. Next time we'll bring snowshoes and play a little longer. The road to the closure is mostly clear and easily driven with a regular car.

Diablo Lake Trail (Apr 17)

Diablo Lake

North Cascades

Follow the Diablo Lake Trail up and across talus slopes on the flanks of Sourdough Mountain to impressive cascading waterfalls and stunning views. This hike in the North Cascades Institute's backyard makes a great option for an early season hike in stunning North Cascades National Park, much of which is inaccessible during the winter and spring.
