Sunrise in Swakane Canyon.
Road to the trailhead is potholed but my 2WD Corolla made it OK. Got an early start and watched the sun light up the canyon. The deer were out in force with my first sighting less than a quarter of a mile into the hike. We seemed to crisscross each other's paths as the trail climbed culminating with maybe 20 or 30 deer congregating at the top. There was still snow on the trail where it is shaded from the sun (north faces after 3 miles). I wish I had my snowshoes for some of these areas.

Views from the top are amazing. The hike is listed as a 6 mile hike but that is an arbitrary number and if you stop after 3 miles you miss the change in scenery closer to the top when it is forested with pine trees. The Swakane Canyon fire from July 2012 changed the landscape but don't let that stop you from enjoying this terrific hike. Last summer we made this a 12 mile round trip and picked an arbitrary stopping point for that hike as well.

I saw what I assume are hoof prints from sheep but it was all deer today. Note: there is no water on this hike.

Lewis River Trail

South Cascades

We're at the cusp of waterfall season! With five waterfalls in a 7-mile roundtrip, this Lewis River hike is one to keep on your April-June to-do list. If you're hiking with creaky knees or kiddos, take in the magnificent, close-in Lower Lewis River Falls. If you want a longer hike with some ups and downs, venture all the way to Taidnapum Falls, 3.5 miles in.
