Crystal peak Crystal Lakes

Type of Outing
Day hike

Overall, the trail is in good condition. The log bridge just after the trail junction which goes to Crystal Lakes is washed out. The log is broken in 1/2 and it requires cautious stepping to make it across this area. On the upper part of the trail, there is one major section of snow remaining. It is about 200' across. It is passable, but requires firm ""march"" stepping to make an impact and get a good grip. Some hikers had chosen to go up and around this snowfield, however it looked like an extremely lengthy detour. There were many wild flowers along the way and we only encountered 6 other hikers on this Tuesday hike.

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
