This is a great hike for views. Trail is brushy the first couple of miles, several stream crossings but none of them present a problem. The beginning of the trail is actually old road which the forest is taking over. It's been years since I've been there and the trees have really grown a lot taller. There are still a few good viewpoints of peaks across the way. We saw an interesting sight about a mile along the road -- a ball of snakes sunning on a rock. There were about five of them. When they saw us they separated but allowed themselves to be photographed before sliding away into their rocky dens. They were very pretty with yellow stripes and red markings. Once the trail left the road the hard work began. The trail climbs through the forest which is studded with mossy boulders. There are a couple of swampy areas. We began to hit snow patches in the last mile but not enough to present a problem and ice axes are not needed. We stopped for lunch at the viewpoint above the first lake which is partially thawed (viewpoint at 4900 feet). Cold day. Felt more like October than August. Met several backpackers coming in and we wondered whether or not they'd find places to camp as there are only three designated campsites available. This is a good hike but the road to the trailhead is a little rough. Passenger cars should be OK if they don't try to hurry. Ice axes would come in handy if you are going on from the lake.
