Washouts

This is a good hike for the winter or if you don't have much time. It gains 3000 feet in 2.8 miles before disappearing, according to Wood's trail guide. We got up about two miles in 1:15 before we had to turn back due to impending darkness. The trail starts behind the Elwha Ranger Station about 5 miles from Highway 101. Despite a full day of heavy rain, the trail was mostly dry, especially up higher. Since it is a ridge trail, there were no creeks to cross, which was a good thing since the Elwha was flooding big time. There was a trail washout at a switchback, but it wasn't too hard to get around. At 1875 feet (per the sign), one can walk out on a moss-covered rock for a great view.
