We started this hike at 8:00 in the morning and crested the ridge at the junction with Garland Peak trail at about 11:00. It started off steeply uphill and stayed that way the entire hike with the exception of one small downhill at Basalt Pass. This hike is one of the most picturesque that we've ever done. After having reached Basalt Pass there is about 1/2 mile of hiking through the trees,(and mosquitoes) and then the trail opens suddenly into ever widening vistas. By the time the top of the ridge is reached the view is enormous, extending from Glacier Peak, south to Mt. Rainier. We didn't see anyone the entire day and from the look of the trail it is not often used. This trail is DRY, so take plenty of water.

Diablo Lake Trail (Apr 17)

Diablo Lake

North Cascades

Follow the Diablo Lake Trail up and across talus slopes on the flanks of Sourdough Mountain to impressive cascading waterfalls and stunning views. This hike in the North Cascades Institute's backyard makes a great option for an early season hike in stunning North Cascades National Park, much of which is inaccessible during the winter and spring.
