Reached the smaller Eight-mile Lake without snowshoes. The lake is still 75% covered with ice. There is snow on the trail and several blow-downs below the smaller lake. Beyond the smaller lake, we lost the trail to snow. Rather than risk breaking through the snow while crossing the boulder field, we had lunch at the small lake. Experienced a brief snow flurry. Reached the car just as it started raining. A fine mountain hike after spending Saturday looking at wildflowers in the Beezley Hills near Quincy.

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
