I decided to return to this Heather Lake this year after 21 years. The road to the trailhead was in good shape. I came in from the Lake Wenatchee side and the guidebook says to turn left onto FS 6702, however, the sign for the turnoff is FS 6700. No big problem, but I had to stop and look at the map. There is parking for half a dozen vehicles at the trailhead and there were two other vehicles there already (WTA trail crew).
The trail is in good condition and has been brushed out nicely by a WTA trail crew. There is one log bridge that has a slight slant to it, and there is one log over the trail near the end of the hike, but neither were problems. We did run into some large patches of snow in the last half mile to the lake, but these were not a problem and they should be gone soon.
The trail is a pretty walk through the forest for about 1.5 miles to a creek crossing. After the iron bridge, the trail grade increases and you gain about 1000 feet in the next 1.5 miles. The hike is mostly in forest so there is shade for protection from the sun. The forest is a delight to hike through. The final portion of the trail is almost level to the lake.
The trail comes out on a nice set of rocks to stop and enjoy lunch. Since we were there on a weekday, we got lucky and had the lake to ourselves. There was a stiff breeze and we had to put on long sleeve shirts for a bit of protection from the wind. There were no bugs at all on this day.
Very delightful hike to a pretty lake. well worth it.
