Why isn't this trail better known???? It is beautiful, with old growth forests, rushing streams, alpine meadows, and gorgeous 360 degree views from the mountain top.

Shadow Dog and 2 human companions hiked Rock Mountain from off the Smithbrook trail head (the easier way with less elevation gain). The road was reported to have wash outs and rocks in the way, but it was no problem driving to the well marked trail head. NO Forest pass needed. First third of the trail is relatively easy in the forest (shade), you cross a meadow (with water available)where you can see your goal way up in the sky, then the next third climbs through forest, and the last third is exposed meadow as it climbs to the ridge line. The ridge overlooks Rock Lake, and over to Nason Ridge. You climb 10 more minutes to the top of Rock Mountain with a gorgeous view of many snow covered peaks.

No bugs, water available in first third, no wind, perfect clear skies

you cross an avalanche zone of trees at one point over snow, easy to cross; snow patches off trail at top

Miles: about 10

elevation gain 3300 ft

Time: (taking it easy) 6 1/2 hours
