My brother and I have been checking on this hike every other week now, it is one of our favorite places. We finally made it all the way to the lake this time. We got within about a 1/4 mile of the trail head by vehicle before we ran into snow. The trail was covered in snow for the most part with a few clear patches. The lake was about 90% frozen still, but beautiful all together. It was freezing rain the entire time.

Hiking today was mom, another adult male, kids ages 9,8,8,5, and two dogs. Road to trailhead was fairly smooth just a couple of potholes, but nothing the mini-van couldn't handle. Dogs right away found where people had use the "facilities" near the parking (please pack in / pack out!!!) This trail is very easy especially with kids. Roots are abundant and watching your footing is essential. There were a couple of blow downs across the trail, which look to be fairly recent mostly rotted trees that fell (see pictures) and of course one is right across where the trail turns to go up around/up the rocky area and kids lost trail until adult got there. At the lake there was one group camping on the shore. The whole day it was only us and one other group of older gentelmen hikers. Our kids swam in the lake for about 30 minutes. We did not see any snow no feel that the bugs were that bad. Yes I did spray my youngest with spray because he is allergic to skeeter bites, but none of the other kids complained. Campsites looked in good order and maybe someday we can try one out.

Lovely little hike, just right for my nieces who are five and three. Thunder drove us away from the lake, but we had nice wading before then. I didn't get to wander to the campsites, but I'd like to stay here.

This trail is one of my favorite kinds of trails--not that hard, not that far, yet somehow ends up making you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere and nobody. Nice little backcountry lake. Some bugs, but hey, it's Washington.

It was a beautifull hike and very nice and cool since most of it is in the trees and it was very hot in the sun. I went with my wife, 16month old son, and Thumper our mountain dog. The dog enjoyed the lake, i wish we could have however the bugs were so terrible they literaly sent us running. As soon as we got to the water and stopped the bugs swarmed us. It was absolutely miserable and turned a nice sunny day hike into a mad dash to get back to the car. This would be a nice short hike and great scenery if the bugs werent heating you alive. The rest of the trail was good with just a couple muddy spots that we had to trouble crossing.

Coooooold lake! And busy too. Went up for a friends birthday party in the woods. All campsites on the lake were taken, so we all ended up camping down on Lake Evans. Saturday we just played around camp and a little bit of inflatable boat action on the little lake. But Sunday it was just too darn hot not to go and swim in Boardman. Man was is cold. Sure felt good though. There is a nice little cove with a sweet rock to dive off of. After the boats were inflated, we decided to row across and play on the remaining snow on the far side of the lake. Once our snowball fight fix was finished, we decided to fill one of the boats with snow to share with our crew back on the other side. Man was that fun, snowball fight, in the water, in July.

We left the Boardman Lake Trailhead Thursday night 7/5/2012 around 8 pm. We weren't sure if we'd have enough light to make it up and set up camp but we went for it anyway.

Headed up trail, dusk. Trail was easy enough... Some very muddy patches. Passed a small lower lake on right. Kept going. Some up, up, but short. Rooty areas, no snow at this time any where near the trail. Once you start going down a bit, you're almost there. At the Y, head left to cross small log jam across lake outlet to find five or so established camping areas.

We stayed the nights of 7/5 and 7/6.

Things to note:

Nice lake - some nice views, some snow patches still left around the lake. No real trail to circle the lake that we could find.

Super (and I mean SUPER) buggy. Not the biting kind, but knats all around your face, in nose, ears, eyes, mouth. I will definitely bring a bug mask next time. Deet did nothing to help... Small smoke fire kicked them out of camp. When the smoke died down or we built up a flame, they came back with a vengeance. Saw two little kids in another camp who repeated "Shoo Fly!" They were taking it better than I was!

Saw fish jump, caught nothing. Nice rocky outcroppings to fish though. Relaxing!

Lots of fisher people and day hikers throughout Friday. All spots full by Friday night.

There is a "toilet" with a surprisingly nice view of the valley - follow signs. Bring TP of course.

No wildlife sightings unless you count cute dogs galore, birds, and water lizards.

Every established site has a fire ring and ours had a nice bench.

Not much litter - yay!

Kept cool in the trees though many sunny spots if you wanted it. I saw lots of people swim too although they usually went for a quick cold dip.

So go! But bring a bug shield!!!!!

This trailhead popular hike was full of cars this afternoon, but the crowds were well dispersed along the trail and at the lake so we still had a sense of solitude. The road up had some large pothole, and by a wide clearing/gravel pit there is a fairly large trench eroded across the road, OK if taken slowly but maybe not if taken fast, and the beautiful view to the north is enough to distract you until the last moment. There were a few muddy spots on the trail, but my grandkids were able to step through or around and still made it back with dry socks and sneakers.

Some snow near the trail aproaching Boardman Lake, and lots of water running down the trail in places - wear waterproof footwear. The lake is beautiful with some ice still floating.

We decided to do a late day hike. We passed through Granite Falls around 5:45pm and were at the trail head at 6:30pm. Low cloud cover but not raining. Trail board said .8 miles to the lake. Only one other car was there.

First part of the trail was slightly wet. About 1/4 mile in there were more mud holes and two trees down. Only one mud hole was worth walking around but all others you can make it through with hiking boots. The trees were easy to climb over but may be a little difficult if you had a dog with you. Very little snow on the trail but a few patches here and there.

When we were almost there we passed the two other folks heading back so we had the lake to ourselves. Lake still has ice on it and was beautiful. Log bridge is not quite a bridge but stacked up logs that you have to navigate. They were a little slippery but you are able to make it. There are a few good uphill sections on the trail going there and it was a nice pace on the way back. Being 5'3" this was a good leg work at but an easy hike. Loved the old growth trees, mist and clean air! Going up again soon!

We left Snohomish at 12:30, temp was around 57 degrees. No rain just a cool crisp afternoon. No traffic or other vehicles present until we actually arrived at parking area at trail head. Trails were a bit wet/muddy but very walkable. Trace amounts of snow present along trail. The lake was Beautiful. Water still cold, with ice still on majority of lake. I can't wait for further in Summer to visit again. Great hike for families.

We headed out pretty early to get to Independence Lake, it is a pretty decent drive out. We got to the dirt road and went about 3.5 miles and then there was snow covering the road. It was pretty deep and my little car couldn't make it over it. I would have parked my car on the side but the road is VERY narrow and wouldn't have left room for others cars to pass. We then back tracked down to the highway and tried Deer Creek, got about 2 or so miles in and same thing lots of snow covering the road. Same thing with Boardman Lake and Ashland Lake. We then gave up on doing a new trail and went to Lake Twenty Two. It is a lovely trail but very busy with other people and their pets. There is still snow on the trail, trekking poles and yaktraks highly recommended. Overall it was a great day to hike, and at least we got to see the beautiful lake once again. It was nice seeing the difference of what two weeks of sunshine had done to the snow.

LOTS OF SNOW ON THE TRAIL! We stopped on the forest road maybe 1/2 mile from the trailhead due to hard packed wet heavy snow... some places were a few feet deep on the edge of the road. And the lake was frozen over except for a small spot at the outlet. Bring clothes to stay warm and shed them once you're at the lake. It was a warm day.

I went out this morning expecting a short walk/hike to Boardman to spend a few hours reading in the sun. Despite the wonderful weather, the short and easy hike was not to happen. As the last trip report indicated, the road to the trailhead is inaccessible due to snow about a mile short of the trailhead. I had a 4WD and still did not risk it. I doubt any vehicle, regardless of clearance, would make it. When I arrived around 1030 there was already one car parked short of the snow so I figured I'd just hoof it to the trailhead.

The snow on the road to the trailhead varies from a few inches to several feet. The top few inches were soft but hiking boots were sufficient. I doubt snowshoes would be of significant value. It took the better part of an hour to make it up to the trailhead. That part alone was worth the effort as the view across the valley from the quarry was spectacular today.

The parking lot at the trailhead is covered with several feet of snow (see the picture). The trail itself is also covered in snow, and when the trail is not covered it is fairly wet. Finding the trail was easy, as several sets of footprints guided the way. Postholing was only a problem in a few areas and was fairly easily avoided ( with a few notable exceptions that left me knee deep). It was worse on the descent as the temperature went up. Regardless, the footing was rarely an issue given the lack of elevation gain and the terrain, though there are a few points near the lake that require some care. Spikes are not necessary but poles could be useful.

Boardman Lake was frozen over with just a small area near the log jam free (see picture). Otherwise, the weather was perfect. The path around the lake is all but impassable even for the adventuresome.

All in all, Boardman Lake was worth the added effort. The added distance and conditions cut down on the crowds at this popular destination. But if you are looking for a family/kid friendly hike, this is not it in the current conditions. I'd wait a few more weeks.

Heavy snow on the roadway about a mile short of the trail head. Little to no snow in the woods alongside the road. Snow is wet and soft, so I would recommend Snowshoes to walk the last mile of FS Road #4020. Not for kids at this point.

Most weeks we head out the door with a couple of destinations in mind. We mostly want some alternatives just in case we find trail access washed out or closed, but sometimes weather conditions also play a role. This week heavy rain prodded us toward a very short but popular destination just off the Mountain Loop Highway: Boardman Lake. Despite being well-prepared and very used to hiking in the rain, we just didn’t feel up to facing the rain after such a short summer.

This short trail wastes no time diving into the trees. The forest here is mature, and only becomes older as you press deeper under the canopy. The junction of Evans Lake appears almost immediately, veering off to the right. The walk out to this tree-lined lake is not more than a few hundred yards, though the marshy shore is not nearly as welcoming as Boardman. Either way, the wide trail continues to wander through old-growth forest.

Our friends wanted to learn backpacking. They bought equipment and we took them on a training overnighter at Boardman Lake. I don't think anyone goes there this time of year because there were large blueberries everywhere. We had a wonderful time at the lake, which we had all to ourselves. The sunrise was beautiful. Our friends wanted to see the Ice Caves, so we took them there this morning. The ice caves were not as interesting as the Coho Salmon under the aluminum bridge. The fish are waiting for the rain to raise the water level so they can go further upstream to spawn. The trip was a huge success. Our friends are anxious to go again. I hope the weather permits more outings so we won't have to wait until next season for more fun.

Our weekend hike to Boardman Lake, a few miles south of the Mountain Loop Highway on the Mt. Baker-Snohomish National Forest, offered a hike through the giants. It’s only one mile and a few hundred feet eleveation gain and great for kids. Ethan took his time to the lake as he explored mushrooms, spider webs, and large fallen cedar trees. Autumn yapped, or yelled at times, as we made our to the lake.

Within an hour we were at the lake. The views were gorgeous and lake very peaceful. We enjoyed lunch and, afterwards, the kids threw rocks in the lake. I think the best part on this hike was that we never saw a soul until noon when we were heading back down the trail. Not bad for a weekend hike.

Easy hike (0.8 mi one way) to Lake Evan and Boardman Lake after a visit to Pinnacle and Bear Lakes. In my opinion, not as scenic as Pinnacle, but it seems there were less bugs, no mud, no snow, and less roots on the trail. Boardman is also larger. There was a family there trying to teach some kids how to swim?

Since I had already made the five mile drive up, I decided to check out Boardman Lake (mostly looking for future hikes for when grandchildren are a bit older). I was not disappointed.

Again, the road up is in good repair with an added bonus of a viewpoint of peaks down the Mountain Loop highway. Of course, the parking lot was full with many families and a few dogs (mine, the only two on a leash). I could not find a privy nor a trash can(I didn't hike up to the group campsite due to crowds so wonder if there are "facilities" there?) There were are few of those pesky flies but not too bad.

Almost right from the start is the pretty little Lake Evan. From there the trail was dry and relatively easy (for a "1") to Boardman Lake. The great thing about this lake is there are a few spur trails so we were able to veer away from the group area and find a "beachy" shore area to sit and enjoy a beautiful lake view. The dogs were able to safely swim, and many kids were enjoying the chilly water as well (it was like being at camp :-) The bugs were really not too bad so we could linger awhile.

The only issue with this hike was a bit of trash strewn here and there. I had a small doggie-do bag so was only able to pack out some of it--the worse being a plastic latte cup at Lake Evan.

This is a nice day hike for families to a beautiful lake. It is also a great place ot teach children the rule of "packing in, packing out". I see it is also a snowshoe trail so am excited to see this in the winter.

The trail to Boardman Lake is dry and easy to follow. Although there are plenty of spots to enjoy the lake from the end of the trail, the logjam at the lake's outlet is easy to cross. Doing so will give you access to several campsites (only one was in use during my visit)and even more places from which to enjoy the lake.

The amount of litter on the trail is a clear indication of just how heavily used this area is. I picked up what I could, but I draw the line at used toiled paper. Please remember to PACK IT OUT!

I took my five year old on this short outing to Boardman Lake and Lake Evan. The trail is easily accessible from the Mountain Loop Highway via a 5 mile FS road. The FS road is in good shape and accessible for cars of all sorts at this time. Lake Evan greets you off to the right just past the trailhead and is a good place to stop and gaze. The rest of the .8 mile trail to Boardman Lake is in great shape with some moderate ups and downs and mud in some places. Bug repellent may be needed as there are a lot of bugs and there is standing water in a few places. For the most part, the trail to Boardman Lake was easy to navigate and manage.

Once you get to the lake, there is a short trail that goes to the right leading to beach access. There is also a less obvious trail to the left that leads to a log boom which takes you to the other side of the lake. We decided to stay on the beach access side for the most part. I wouldn't recommend the log boom option with young children as some of the logs appeared to be rotting and unstable. This is a great hike with beach access and it is short enough to haul up a picnic lunch, fishing equipment or beach toys.

I've decided that hiking in the rain is just a part of the reality that is Summer 2011 in the Pacific Northwest! Another wet hike this past week to Boardman Lake and Lake Evan.

This is such a great short hike to a beautiful area! The trail to Lake Evan is very short - .1 miles. Boardman Lake is another .7 miles beyond and has some elevation gain, but is fairly easy. The trail was a small creek the day we were there as it was POURING!

There were mud holes and lots of water the whole way. Thank goodness for waterproof hiking boots! We walked to both lakes and ate a quick lunch standing under a tree at Boardman Lake and headed back to the car. We were surprised to see a couple of other cars at the trailhead being mid-week and wet! Don't forget your NW Forest Pass as you will need to display it in your car at the trailhead. If you don't have one, you can purchase one at the Verlot Ranger Station on the way to the trailhead.

This is a very easy hike; perfect for beginners. The old logging road leading to the trail head is well-maintained and relatively pothole-free. The trail leading to Boardman lake was a bit muddy, but nothing a good pair of hiking boots couldn't handle.

Before reaching Boardman Lake, we first encountered Evan Lake. Despite its beauty, we didn't linger long, choosing instead to keep hiking up to Boardman. After about 20 minutes, we reached Boardman. Despite the preponderance of insects, we enjoyed loitering on the rocks near the lake. The family lounging on the rocks right before us had left a few cigarette butts on the rock and in the water, which we dutifully picked up. We passed a lone fisherman who claimed he saw a mother black bear and a couple cubs on the trail leading to the lake. We didn't encounter any other people (or bears) the whole day.

On the east side of the lake, we saw a few empty camping areas. In the same vicinity we discovered the "toilet"--a wooden box in the middle of the trail. This was good for a few laughs.

My only disappointment with this hike was the absence of a decent trail encircling the lake. We heard what we assumed was a waterfall located in the SW corner of the lake, but were unable to see it because we couldn't find a trail reaching that corner of the lake. Despite this, I would still recommend this hike based on its low costs and high rewards.

We took our 3 1/2 year old on this hike. He walked/ran the whole way in. Even where there were roots and rocks to climb on, he did well. There were a lot of cars in the parking area, but we did not have to share a spot by the lake with anyone because the lake is so large and there are so many spots. There was a bunch of adults and kids swimming, so the water must not be too cold.

The trail is in excellent shape. There are a couple trees to navigate around, but that was fun for the little guy. There were a few bugs, but there was a light breeze and we didn't even need to put on bug spray.

Headed Up Boardman Lake Trail around 12:00 PM. As many as 20 cars in the parking lot. This place is used a lot especially by families because its an easy hike and very beautiful. HINT: The trail head is easy to miss. It is hidden in the trees just before the parking lot on the left when you are driving up. This trail is a very quick climb so you could combine this with other trail hikes in the area like I did. It only takes a few steps up the trail and you will be at Evan Lake. This lake is used extensively by fisherman because they can carry their rafts to it so as to fish all parts of the lake quickly and safely. A beautiful lake but the trail around the lake is not built up or maintained. A lot of brush to move out of your way. Some very good views at the beginning. The .8 mile hike to Boardman Lake is well worth the hike regardless of the fact that there will be lots of young kids there swimming and yelling. Just hike off to the left as far as the trail will go and you will get away from the noise and have a different view of this lake. I would recommend an overnight stay here when most of the day hikers have left for the day. This lake has one of the best shorelines to walk along, take pictures and see the fish jumping. I will be camping up here for one night this summer for sure. Bring your fishing pole. Even if your not much of a fisheman, it will make you relax and take in the views. DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS HIKE. Well worth it for everyone. P.S. Check out my videos on youtube of this lake and others on the Mountain Loop Highway at lmm3181.

This was our second hike of the day and I am sad to report that we did not make it all the way to the lake. My 3 year old was in the backpack falling asleeping and I was just not comfortable trying to climb the sharp rocks and roots on the last leg of the trail. Plus my hiking partner has a bum ankle and didn't want to press it. We will be going back with daddy to make it all the way to the lake in the near future.

However, the reason I am writing this reveiw is that on the way down in the car we saw and older juvenile BEAR munching on the side of the road. I just thought you should all know that he/she was out there near the trail.

Our hike to Boardman Lake was lovely. But, it involved lots of bugs at the trail head and lots of bugs at the lake. The lush greenery and beautiful trees that stand ever so tall were breath taking. There were many many little hemlock starts that were reaching towards the heavens as they try to make as much growth as possible in our summer weather. The little white wildflowers were to be seen everywhere.
The weather was pleasant. Some sun peaked through the trees and sometimes clouds would appear only to disappear and bring the sun back.
There was a very muddy point at the very beginning of the trail but otherwise was a great trail to hike.
As I said lots of bugs but not the kind that would be affected by bug spray. Just keep walking and they don't seem to bother you.
Just a note that if you are not careful you will miss the sign for the trailhead. It is on the left side of the road almost covered by branches. We overshot the trailhead and took a tour down a very narrow part of the road.
A wonderful hike to be enjoyed by young and old.

BUGS!!! BUGS!!! BUGS!!! i went during the early afternoon thinking a lake would be a nice change from my dog throwing up seawater all over the truck. It would have been a very nice hike for my 2 yr old daughter, the dog, and I had it not been for the bugs. Used an entire can of OFF and it did no good what-so-ever.
Bring bug spray, though it doesn't help much!! Also, the trailhead is very easy to miss. Keep your eyes peeled!

We hiked this on an overcast day. It was 47' F at the trailhead and we were prepared with jackets and long pants, but forgot the gloves. There was quite a bit of water on the trail and some mudholes but nothing awful.

The lakes are both beautiful and we crossed the logjam at Boardman Lake and wandered over to the other small beach.

Lots of little wildflowers were around. There were also lots of annoying gnats flying around, perhaps because of all the standing water.

My 4-yr-old decided to take a walk into the lake so he was wet and cold on the trail down. Good times that we'll remember for years! Be prepared with towels and extra clothes back at the car so you don't have to sit in muddy stuff on the drive home.

Be advised, my low clearance car bottomed out a couple times and there are some pretty significant pot holes. There is also snow on the road toward the top, but it's not bad. Yet, my tiny little car made it!

The trail itself is has snow on it. There is also a lot of snowmelt (water) running down the snow free parts of the trail. There was an entire mud mini-lake that I had to carry my 9yr old over.

That being said - the lake is absolutely beautiful in it's ice and snow. It is an easy grade and a short hike to a very stunning scene.

First time on this hike and took my almost 3 year old son. The road up is clear but there are quite a few pot holes so drive carefully! Got to the trail around 11am. Drove past it at first and got my car all scratched up, but thats a story for another time.

Came to lake Evan and it was so still, perfect reflection on the lake of the trees! Across the lake there was ice, but nothing on our side. There were a few blow downs but nothing too hard to get around. The beginning of the hike was wet and muddy but the further you go the dryer it becomes. Very rocky and a lot of roots especially on the last part down to Boardman Lake.

Came to Boardman and the sign pointing to the toilet and campsites got me excited. It was a little confusing as the trail gets a little lost at this sign and I just decided to take the way that looked the least wet/slippery/difficult down to the lake. however the trail kind of ends at a blockage and the whole lake is stopped up with a huge dam of dead trees and logs. I could see a staircase across the lake, but didnt dare try to cross those logs with my son. Scary, so we just sat and he played his favorite game of throwing rocks into the water and making big splashes.

With him in tow it took a LOT longer than it would have if I was alone all in all I left my house in marysville around 10am and got back around 3pm. Be sure to wear some nice supportive shoes because there is a lot of rocky rooty areas that are a twisted sprained ankle waiting to happen.

What a great day for a hike! Due to the wonderful spring-like weather I've been in the outdoors three weekends running. I needed to get the house ready for a Super Bowl party so a short trail was the order of the day. I've visited Boardman Lake a couple times before but never this early in the year and it was exciting to see the lake still in winter mode. For my second hike in a row I had a friend tag along which is unusual for me as I do love to make solo runs but this place is a treat that must be shared with others.

Forest Service Rd 4020 had no major issues once leaving the Mtn. Loop Hwy. other than some washboarding and ruff spots. We found one other car in the parking area when we arrived. The trail itself is in pretty good shape too. There are some spots with water on the trail along with mud holes. There are also some minor blow downs and debris covering the trail in places. All the obstacles were easy to navigate around. The stairs, boardwalks, and logs at the creek head dumping from the lake were damp and slick so watch your step.

Lake Evans was still nearly frozen solid when we arrived and a neat sight. The hike up the trail is great with lots of green out already and of course the old growth trees. We encountered one small patch of snow on the way to Boardman and another on the way to the back-country toilet once at the lake, both could be stepped around. Boardman Lake itself was a nice place to sit and each lunch. An older couple were on the way out not long after we arrived so my friend and I had the place to ourselves most of our time there. The lake was starting to emerge from its winter freeze but is still ice covered most of the way around. A good way to spend the morning. I was home again before 2!

A beautiful morning for an April hike...in January. The trail through the forest was 45 degrees, high clouds but no rain so quite comfortable in just a fleece jacket, which I had to open to vent the heat of the 1100' climb. The trail was snow free all the way to the lake.
The trail around the lake was mostly snow free, but watch out for the few patches on the west and south sides of the lake. The snow has thawed and frozen again, and it has been polished to glass smoothness by the boots of many hikers. Take care and stay off it when you can.
The wind kicked up on the south and west sides as well, making it feel more like it was 25 degrees, so we stopped to put on another layer. An interesting sight on the lake's south shore was a stand of trees that had recently been snapped in two about 10 to 15 feet up their trunks. There were no boulders, and there sure hasn't been enough snow for an avalanche to have done that this winter, so I think that it may have been a microburst, a very localized column of sinking air, producing damaging divergent and straight-line winds at the surface that can snap a two foot diameter tree like a twig. Standing in the brisk wind at the bottom of this bowl, looking up at the steep cliffs, I was thankful that today's wind was only a stiff breeze.
It was still early when we got back to the car, so we decided to take in the short trip to nearby Boardman Lake. After stopping in 1/10th of a mile to view scenic little Evan Lake, we climbed 300' in 3/4ths of a mile in a light snow. I think this trail and destination were both prettier than Heather Lake. I almost passed it up because it was too easy. Most of the time it doesn't seem like a "real" hike to me until I've invested some sweat and toil to earn it, but I was glad I talked myself into it.
It began snowing pretty heavily at the lake, big feather sized flakes, so we headed back down. By the time we hit Granite Falls we were driving in steady rain, but I'm happy to say that I didn't feel my first raindrop until I was in my own driveway. I'll chalk today up as a victory!

Jim and I decided to do some snowshoeing on the Mountain Loop Highway. As usual, we got a late start and did not arrive at the Loop until after 2 pm. We drove over to Deer Creek thinking that there might be some snow up the valley somewhere. But, alas, the gate was shut, and we didn't have time to hike three miles to the snow line, wherever that is in this El Nino afflicted year.

Then we though, why not Boardman Lake? Surely, we thought, we could drive nearly to the trailhead and snowshoe around on the forested ridges above. Nice idea, but there was only a trace of snow at the parking lot, and the snowshoe turned into a hike. Maybe there is some snow at Island Lake, but we didn't have time to try that!

It felt strange to be hiking on the snowless trail in January. Boardman Lake was still iced over, but there was hardly any snow on its shore. Cracks in the ice formed a pretty pattern on the lake's surface. The short trail to the lake (0.8 miles) has some big blowdowns on it, nothing too hard to get around. The trail is horribly eroded by running water in some spots. Even on this popular and family friendly trail, the Forest Service is not doing a good job with maintenance.

We started off relatively early in the morning, as we were the first group there. The trail was a little wet due to the previous day's rains, but it wasn't muddy. This is a very good trail for small children. Our 2 year old son had almost no trouble negotiating it at all on foot. There are a few blowdowns across the trail, but are easily negotiated.

By the time we got to the lake, the sun had finally started to warm everything up, and we had lunch at one of the campsites then played at the lake's edge for a while. Absolutely beautiful scenery. There were a few ripe huckleberries, which our son absolutely loved.

On the trip back down, we encountered a few other groups of day hikers, but it was still a very quiet, peaceful trail.

On my drive to Boardman lake i noticed something i have never experienced in year of hiking the mountain loop area. Smoke and haze from wild fires. I don't recall the trail being that short to Boardman lake. It seemed like i reached the lake before my leg muscles had a chance to warm up. There are three blow downs to duck under. Two of them could easily be taken care of with a folding saw. The other is quite large. But they are easy to negotiate. Boardman lake itself is quite warm and comfortable to swim in.

Boardman lake itself was not my goal. Instead i was headed to Island lake, beyond Boardman, to do a planed trash clean up. The route to Island lake is a crude unmaintained social trail. It's muddy, brushy, and full of blow downs and the bugs are atrocious. I received some information via internet, that there was two abandoned inflatable rafts and a pair of oars. I found three abandoned rafts and the oars.
It seems to be a common theme at little off the radar places like this to find an abandoned raft or two. I have heard fishermen refer this to as donating it to the lake, for others to use. This is misguided. If some how they last a season, the never last the winter and become unusable.
PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT!

Unfortunately i did not have space to pack the oars and had to leave them at the lake.

My friend C called me Thursday morning to get some hiking ideas, since her mom is in town. It turns out that we had the week off due to parent teacher conferences (woo hoo for half-day kindergarten!) so we could join them. We hurriedly threw a bunch of stuff together, and we were out the door up the Mountain Loop Highway by 11:45. We chose Boardman Lake since it was easy and beautiful yet enough of a hike to be worth the drive. C hadn’t been there yet, but this was our third trip this year. It was pretty cold at the trailhead, and we layered everyone up and hit the trail. One of the kids was crying in the first minute due to a large stick being confiscated; then they said they wanted to go home and didn’t want to walk. But that quickly passed, and everyone had a pretty good attitude the rest of the trip.

There was a lot of water on parts of the trail, and some mud in a few places, but nothing too much for little feet to handle. The next-to-youngest hiker, age 2, was able to make it the whole way up to the lake under his own power (he went in the pack for most of the trip down). The kids marveled at the fungi and big mossy trees. In brief moments between chatter I was impressed again by how still this forest is, how deep the quietness is. The only wildlife we experienced was a squirrel in the distance chirping an alarm call. There were a few huckleberries hanging doggedly to the bushes; C tried them and said they were waterlogged and not tasty at all. The only fall color was some of the bunchberry bushes showing red near the lake, and some other brownish yellow bushes. Otherwise the forest was still pretty green and lush.

The level of the lake was up quite a bit since we were there in the summer. We stayed at the lake for about an hour. We managed to keep the kids from getting too wet, while letting them throw rocks and sticks. (That was one of the big incentives to keep the two-year-old moving up the trail.) The sun came out briefly while we were resting and snacking. There was snow on the ridges surrounding Boardman Lake – no wonder it was so chilly! Soon it was time to get up and head back down to the cars, so we would not run out of daylight. Grandma was a big help keeping the kids on track and moving along. It sure is nice to have an extra set of hands. We made it back down the road in time to see some beautiful light from the viewpoint at the quarry. All in all, it was a great day to be out and I am so grateful we got to join our friends on this unexpected trip. I’m really proud of all our hikers; they have had some good experience this year.

Dicentra and I took our kids out to Boardman Lake today. I had been there a few years ago earlier in the spring when there was still snow on the road and trail and the lake was only partially melted. I have been wanting to go back ever since, since I had fond memories of that trip. Today the trail and lake were all melted out. There are some large trees down over the trail that required some flexibility and balance to get over, especially with a kid on one’s back. There were all these tiny little flies that would swarm round our heads, even getting in our eyes. I think we may have been bit a few times, but they weren’t too voracious, just pesky. There were a few mosquitoes out, too. The trail is wet in places, and has some mud patches, but overall it is in pretty good shape. Flowers are all around, including bunchberry, false lily of the valley, and several groups of coralroot. We saw some interesting plants at the lake; a few of them we could not identify. The FS info sheet says there are rare plants in the basin; we hope we can come back again some day without the kids and explore more with our flower guides in hand.

The kids did a really good job on this hike. It was just about the right distance for this day; 1.6 miles round trip, with 200 feet elevation gain. Gabriel named one tree the Claw Tree due to its clumps of dead branches. He found a large stump to peek underneath. We saw lots of fungus, including some orange cup fungus. We admired lichens, mosses, berries, flowers, sticks, and bird songs. I was proud of Gabriel for tackling some stretches of trail that seemed difficult to him. I kept coaching him to take it easy and just make one step at a time (over rocks, down tree root staircases, etc.) What a big difference this was even from last fall. He truly was a joy to hike with today. Annika was a trooper in the pack, hardly making a peep. When I let her down at the lake, she made a beeline for the water and I couldn’t keep her away the whole time we were there. She picked up rocks and splashed in the water. Hopefully she won’t get giardia! She would have crawled right in if I had let her. Maybe this summer we’ll go back on a nice warm day and wade. There is a good beach at the outlet stream for playing in the water. Dicentra’s daughter Maddy had a hard time staying out of the water, too, and got wet, as well.

We got rained on but had some sun breaks. My favorite part was the sound of the silence in the forest along the trail. The forest there is just wonderful. I had a great time, and I can’t wait to go back.

The road and trail are clear to Boardman Lake. Only one blowdown. The gnats are out and will swarm around your face but they don't seem to bite. It was partly cloudy and damp, but the old growth trees are nice and lots of deer fern, wood fern and vanilla leaf. Saw a party of three coming down the trail are we were ascending. They reported sighting a black bear near the trail. Nice little lake and hike for a short trip and lunch, or with kids.

Road was snow covered about 3/4 mile before the TH. Which turned out to be good because the best views were from the road near the quarry. Also, the trail itself is less than a mile so an extra 1.5 added to the round trip is a non-issue. Once off the road and into tree cover, the trail was mostly snow free. Both Evan and Boardman were almost completely snow covered (duh, it's not even May yet). There was an alarming amount of what seemed to be fresh trash at Boardman. Two blow-downs that are barely worth mentioning cross the trail. An easy early season hike even with the added mileage.

Snow blocks the road about a mile before the Boardman Lake trailhead. The snow is not deep and you could probably get through if you had a four-wheel drive vehicle. We didn't like the possibility of spinning out in the slush and getting a wheel off the road since it is quite steep there -- plus it was pleasanter to walk up the road. However, just before we reached the trailhead, a black bear came up on the road and then saw us and crashed back down through the brush. A cloud had moved down the mountain soaking us and making the atmosphere very spooky so we decided to call it a day. Many trees down and partially across the road.

Myself and four others(one was our dog) decided to go on a mid-day hike up to Boardman Lake(Mt. Loop Highway). This hike is a favorite of ours because it's only a mile long, there is a lot of old growth, animals( we saw a small black bear on the service road to the trail head so watch out) and although it's an easy hike it's a lot of fun. Anyways, there is hardly any snow, a few small patches once you get closer to the Boardman Lake. The camp spots look nice and the lake was completely thawed. There were bugs once we reached the lake. other than that this is a perfect first hike for anyone who wants to experience the outdoors.

I parked my car at the start of the real snow on the road to Boardman lake, just a bit before the junction with the road to Bear/Pinnacle/Ashland lakes. Good clearance vehicles with snow tires or studs were making it almost two miles further, up to the second quarry shown on the maps of the area. Nobody has driven past that quarry recently.

Daisy the wonder dog and I walked the road portion of about 2.5 miles in two lazy hours. We had some nice views from the open area at the second quarry. The footing was firm but with a slippery base, due to the hard crust on the snow beneath a thin surface layer. Traction devices on my boots really helped, as the screw heads on my Stabilicers bit into the hard crust of the snow. They weren't absolutely necessary, but they did help in eliminating the occasional slippage that occured before I put them on.

We took a long break at Evan lake, which was solidly frozen-over. Someone had crossed the lake on the ice with no apparent cracking. I stood on the ice near the shore and jumped up and down with no effect on the ice. So I let Daisy play some fetch out on the lake.

Then we did the trail hike to Boardman lake, which was nice. There are some really big trees, lots of snow, and the lake is a decent sub-alpine pond with some surrounding peak-lets. Not really a great summer destination, when the trail is less than a mile of hiking and other, better places abound. But in the middle of winter it makes for a pleasant dayhike. I didn't use the Stabilicers on the way back, as the snow crust had softened slightly, giving my boot tread some bite.

Trip stats are: 7 miles R/T, from about 1/3 mile before the road junction, to Boardman lake. 1,200 ft elevation gain/loss, 95% snow-covered, slippery if it's really cold out. Started at 11 am, finished at 4:30 pm.

I went to the trailhead for Boardman Lake to scout it out for a future trip. Contrary to the info on the Forest Service web site, there is no more snow at the traihead. The lakes are both thawed out. The road is on good condition for the most part. There are a few large trees down over the road that have been cut through enough for one car to pass.

I didn't hike to Boardman Lake since I was alone with my toddler son. We had lunch at Lake Evans. There are a few wet spots in the brush where you can sit, and maybe even camp if you aren't too picky. There were a few bugs out, but not too bad, yet. I talked with a couple who were coming off the trail. They said the snow is mostly gone at Boardman Lake except for a tiny part at the far end. The trail is in good shape, though there is one large tree down near the lake that was tricky to get over since it is on a hillside and is sloped and slippery. It would be tough to get around it, they said.

It was so still and peaceful there, especially after everyone else left. I look forward to returning in the future.

Hey all,

Went to Boardman lake as a good short hike and nice mountain lake. The work to get there is minimal(less than a mile), which suited my purposes fine, seeing as I had a banged up shoulder. I actually camped at the lake and found the bugs to be so unpleasant that I had to pace up and down the shore in order to enjoy staring at the lake. A light rain offered the only salvation from the little beasts. I saw a young black bear female and two of her cubs on the trail. They were in a nice meadow that seemed to invite bear-types into them. They ran away from me pretty quickly, however, and I couldn't see much else of them. For those looking for a very easy walk with a big pay-off as far as scenery goes, Boardman lake is tough to beat. For more hearty adventures, go elsewhere in the Cascades. Nice campspots at the lake and good trail conditions.

Dad, two daughters, one son and Fiona the dog went off for a hike at Boardman Lake (mom had to work). The Boardman Lake trail was a nice walk through the forest. We ate lunch at the lake while enjoying the orange bellied newts swimming around in the lake. After cleaning up our lunch we decided to go swimming and dive off the rocks. It was delightful for a moment. Then the lovely Brenna stepped on someone's garbage - sharp garbage in the water and cut her foot. Thanks to help from other hikers who aided with treating the foot, Brenna and family left the lovely swimming hole for the hospital. Four hours and seven stitches later there will be no hiking or swimming for the next 10 days of summer.

Words of caution: Carry a good first aide kit, wear water shoes and ""if you pack it in pack it out.""

I was going to take my sons backpacking, but with doubtful weather we opted for a hike instead. Even with the rain we found a half dozen cars at the trailhead and a family camping at Lake Evan a little way in from the trailhead.

This trail leads about a mile through old growth redcedar and makes a good rainy day hike. The trail is in great shape, with only a few puddles on a day with heavy rain. It is about a mile to Lake Boardman, making this a perfect all-ages hike. My younger son Ben is four, and he needed very little assistance.

We found some Alaska huckleberries (ripe, but a bit tart) near Lake Boardman, which features a nice gravel beach. The trail to the campsites crosses a stream outlet on a log, and looked too dicey for Ben since it was wet and slippery.

Nice short hike to two small mountain lakes. A little mud and a little snow, but nothing to worry about. One blowdown about halfway to Boardman Lake, but it broke during the fall and can be navigated. Evan Lake has completely thawed, but Boardman Lake is still 3/4 frozed. A log jam has flooded part of the trail, making the stairs on the other side of the creek unreachable by ground, but some were braving a walk over the logs. The road to the trail head is in good shape most of the way. There was more snow at the trailhead than on the trail.

Susie and I went for a nice little New Years stroll up to Boardman lake. We couldn't quite make it all the way to the trailhead by car so parked 1/2 mile down the road and meandered up the snowy road, enjoying views of the Stilly valley from the clearings. From the trailhead, the trail is about 30% snowed in, with quarter mile stretches of bare ground!!! Easy strolling. Boardman lake is mostly iced over and we took pictures of the beautiful patterns of ice around its edges. A lovely way to start the new year. We enjoyed seeing that the trail is still in great shape( we worked on this trail with WTA in 1998.) Happy New Year to all!
