The trail climbs 1600 feet in 2 miles to the grassy ridge top of Skyline Divide with a view of Mt Baker in the distance. We first explored the ridge by turning left off the main trail. The grasses were golden with views of Shuksan, Ruth, Table, Goat, and Winchester. We returned to the main trail and walked up and down for 1.5 miles to a saddle at 6000 ft with views of Mt Baker getting better with each step. At the saddle the trail right continues along Skyline Divide to a saddle at the base of Chowder Ridge. Because our turnaround time was near, we hiked left toward Deadhorse Basin until our turnaround time came. We met a few other hikers who were enjoying the beautiful day and views. The main fall color was in the golden grasses as there were very few berry bushes.

The worst part of this trail is enduring the long bumpy gravel road (12.5 miles)to the trail head. No trail issues except there is no water source, so bring plenty of water. The views are stunning after 1.8 miles into the trail. At about the 3 mile mark, the trail splits off....you can take the high route or the low route. This intersection is marked by a large cairn.....I chose the high route. Round trip is about 9 miles. This is a very popular trail and it would be best to visit during the middle of the week if you have the opportunity.

Day Three - Hmm, September had been so nice - yes, awoke to more clouds. Twelve miles of dirt road with its fair share of washboard, potholes and waves. Although none of that deterred hikers - plenty of cars in the Skyline Divide parking area (and even more when we finished the hike). But it was cloudless at the parking area. September sunshine prevailed. Unlike the other two hikes, this one begins climbing and generally continues to climb right off the bat. Most of the way through forest but with meadow openings as you approach the clear ridge line. The last switchback aims right at Mt Baker. But Shuksan does not disappoint as one completes that last switchback to the ridge. Views in every direction. From the ridge line one can meander the ridge up and down bumps and saddles for splendid walking. Fall color was evident along the ridge walk and in the small meadow areas along the last few switchbacks. Wandered a piece up the ridge, down the ridge, up the ridge, (you get the point) and enjoyed the view. Although it was again marred by the smokey haze that plagued the other two hikes. Sat and ate lunch and imagined the view without the haze.
Eventually, headed on down, back to our accommodations, a quick shower and drive back to Seattle. A bed and shower are a nice way to "camp." A good and tiring three day weekend. |

3 of us started off in fog and clouds with rain threatening and we were initially a bit disappointed, having hoped for clear views and blue skies, but by the time we were finished with a two day back pack trip, we were really happy that we had seen Mt. Baker under these conditions. We made a right turn at the junction where we could have gone down to Chowder basin and headed out to the ridge. What a fantastic ridge line walk. With the clouds heavy in the valley all we could see was the trail on the ridge line, the clouds were literally 10-15 feet below us. It was magical, kind of like walking in the sky. When we got to the saddle we opted to set up our tents since we found a couple of nice flat spots and weren't' sure what was above, and there was a snow field accessible for water and great views of Mt. Baker, now intermittently above the fog. However after setting up tents we continued up to the 6500 foot ridge above and walked as far as we could toward Baker and wished we had taken the risk and found a campsite up top. Stayed up top for sunset (Magenta due to all of the smoke in the air from the Eastern Washington wildfires) and returned before sunrise in the morning to eat our breakfasts while watching the sunrise. We will return next year hoping for blue sky views, but this foggy autumn backpack was one of my favorite hikes ever. Saw WTA work parties both going in and coming out, big hoorah and thank you to those volunteers!

On the drive up to the trailhead, we passed through a thick cloud layer between 2500' and 3900'. From the trailhead at 4350', we started up the steep but excellent trail, breaking into the open 2 miles later at 5900'.
A side trail to the left led to views to the north and east, where the solid cloud layer below dominated the scenery. Back at the junction, Mt. Baker loomed large, with no clouds obscuring it. Mt. Shuksan was still washed out in the morning light, but that would improve. From the junction, the trail south encounters "a little up and down" according to the Hiking Guide. They may be little, but the ups and downs are quite steep. We bypassed the obvious path up to Point 6215, into an area of spectacular views, including blueberries in their fall colors. I continued on solo, taking the rough uphill path at the trail junction, and following it to a treed knoll overlooking a steep drop-off to the northwest. I didn't have time to get to Point 6563, so this became my turnaround point. I rejoined my friend at the 5900' junction for a last look at the views before our return to the trailhead. The solid cloud layer was still between 3900' and 2500' as we drove back out to the highway. |

Left Seattle Sunday morning around 6:00 hoping for “partly cloudy” rather than “mostly cloudy”
Arrived at Trailhead around 9:00 with cool conditions and fog/drizzle. The hike doesn’t mess around and you begin climbing from the beginning, but after a couple of miles, and 1 ½ hrs, you break free from the trees and it opens up to meadows. On a clear day Mt Baker is front and center, but today alas was not the case. Lots of ridges to explore and climb around. We ate lunch watching the fog and clouds dance around, and finally the sky began to break up and visibility improved. Lots of wildflowers still in bloom, but past their peak. Fall color likely a couple of weeks away. Never got the Mt Baker view we hoped for, but enjoyed the hike regardless. |

I love hiking in September! The air is cool, bugs go away and the trails become colorful. In this case, the trail was multi-colored from fire red huckleberry leaves to brilliant purple lupines still in full bloom. The trail is in great shape and easy to follow. The views of Mt Baker are outstanding!
After the hike I headed up to Artist Point. It was nice to see so many families and kids out enjoying the great weather and views. |

Such a beautiful view. I will be planning a trip back with friends and family. Blue skies when we arrived but the forecasts say to expect clouds. It was beautiful. It was not as clear as we'd like but it was still amazing.
I was apprehensive about the steep climb and higher elevation. Half way through the trail I was wondering if we were ever going to make it up there. There were alot of other hikers cruising down as I was heading upwards. The view took my breath away, it was a grand view. I enjoyed a lovely picnic and wandered on the trail for a few more hours before heading down right before sunset. I cannot wait until I come back for an overnight trip. Next time I will make sure to bring alot more water. |

This was a hike with incredible views despite the crowd. We are not fast hikers, but it only took us 1 hour to hike the first 2 miles (with trekking poles) to get to the ridge, but be aware that this is a non-stop ascent for 1 hour! From there on, it’s just awesome views all the way until the end of the trail.
As the guide mentioned, once you get to the ridge, you have the choice of sitting back and enjoying the awesome view without hiking any further or, hike on. We did find the views arguably better if you hike for 1 more mile passing a few knolls that were blocking Mt. Baker from us slightly. We didn’t find bugs to be a problem on the day. Note that there is no water source on the trail, so make sure you bring enough. |

Road update: They must have worked on it this week because it isn't bad at all, contrary to previous reports. Some potholes and rocky spots, but it's at least as good as your average Forest Service road. We saw many passenger cars on it, though I still wouldn't take my Prius. Note that there are many pullouts-if you do need to take it slow, you can pull out and let others pass. We were at the end of a line held up by a silver van with Alaska plates that crawled up the mountain, but refused to pull out to let others go by.
Bugs: Not bad. I wore DEET and there were a few flies, but nothing bad. Few mosquitos. Flowers: Still great. Crowds: We got there at 10:15 (it took exactly 3 hours from west Greenlake). The lot was full and a few cars parked on the road. We saw few people on the way up and a reasonable amount at the top. Going down in the afternoon, it waa shocking how many people were coming up. People were parked for, I'd guess, a half mile down the road. And parked badly--many people didn't want to park close to the edge, so they took up more than half the road. This made getting by problematic, and when a line of cars came up, it was a real mess. And hoards were still coming up at 2 pm. I personally would not do this hike again on a weekend if I were to arrive at the trailhead after 10:30 am. No water or snow left for dogs, so bring some. |

Got a late start and didn't make it to the trailhead until around 1:30p. FR-37 is rough and very narrow, and takes a solid 40 minutes to drive. The hike up was quiet, didn't see many people surprisingly...but the flies were pretty bad. Trail is in great shape. Made it to the meadow at about 3, but didn't go any further due to the time. Can't wait to come back...this is definitely one of the easiest, most scenic hikes you'll find in the Cascades!

It was a long 3-hour drive to the trailhead for my husband and I from Seattle - the last 12.8 miles on FR 37 take at least 30-40 minutes.
The trailhead parking lot was full by our 11:30am arrival time but there were plenty of places to park along the road. The first 2 miles were packed with hiking groups and lots of bugs (mostly flies)!! In fact, the bugs were so thick that we barely stopped to take breaks (despite the steep incline). The trail was dry and very well maintained. Once the trail opened up onto the grassy knoll (at about 2 miles), the bugs thinned out and the views were spectacular! A few small patches of snow on the side of the trail helped cool off our little furry hiking companion Dusty. We climbed up the second knoll to 6215ft. but the views were just as good if not better from down below. After descending this small summit, we continued along the trail for another 15 minutes or so to take in the views of Mt. Baker and find a shady spot to eat lunch. Overall a great hike and I look forward to returning and exploring more of the trail when the bugs aren't such an issue. I may consider a week day too as to avoid the larger crowds. |

Camped at the parking lot to get started at 7am. Just half a dozen cars there at that time. The road was rough, but easily drivable with a low-clearance vehicle at 20+mph (as long as no one is coming the other way).
The trail was in good condition. There were still a few medium-sized patches of snow along the trail on the ridge, but the trail itself was dry. The wildflowers were in full bloom, and we saw some marmots, too. Some bugs, but no swarms. Continued along the ridge up to a highpoint with great views, just short of the end of the trail (according to our map). Encountered a dozen or so parties (incl several camped along the ridge) during the morning, and a constant stream of people in the afternoon, when we headed back down. The trail was in excellent condition, with no snow at all. A few patches linger alongside the trail. Wildflowers in bloom included lupine, aster, phlox, and many others. Incredible views of Mount Baker, which only get better the farther you travel along the ridge. The views towards Shuksan were a bit hazy today, probably due to smoke from the wildfires.
The road to the trailhead is long with some very rough sections and some rather narrow sections. Taking your time is essential. Plan on at least 45 minutes to reach the trailhead after exiting Highway 542. |

My wife and I decided to do this hike on a Friday thinking that it would be a little less crowded, we were wrong. The FR road up to the trail head is 13.3 mile long gravel road and is VERY slow going. We did it in a 4X4 and it still took a good 45 minutes or so to reach the trail head after turning off of SR542. You can do it in a 2WD car but take your time and be very careful as there are a lot of washboard sections, unexpected large potholes. and 1 lane sections lurking. We saw a victim of one of these sections parked on a turnout with a destroyed tire and bent rim. I don't want to turn anyone off of this hike right off the bat but I don't want anyone to hurt themselves or their car on this road. Take your time.
On to the hike, the parking lot had 25+ cars in the lot by 9:30am and there was a line for the bathroom. The bugs started biting as soon as we got out of the truck. After slathering up with bug spray and sun tan lotion we started up the trail. The first two miles are pretty strenuous as you make your way through thick, dark woods. At about two miles you reach the top and are rewarded with amazing views and Mt. Baker teasing you to come closer. The bugs also stopped at the tree line. The flowers were out in full force and were wonderful. We followed the trail up and over a series of 6 peaks finally stopping to eat our lunch and take in the spectacular views of Mt. Baker and Shuksan. The trail continued on and looked free of snow for at least one more peak but it was a lower peak than the one we were on so we decided it was best to eat our lunch where we were and enjoy the afternoon breeze. The crowds also seemed to thin out quite a bit the more we hiked. One side note, at about 3.3 miles from the trail head, the trail splits. One path goes to the right up a steep and rocky incline. The other trail continues straight and skirts the side of one of the peaks. This trail goes for about another 1.3 miles to the valley floor. The trail we took takes you back up the ridge line and offered better views of Mt. Baker and the surroundings. Each peak had its own character and wildflower displays. My wife and I enjoyed this hike but be prepared for a lot of work and bugs before you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. |

Herds of people, many spending the night up near the glacier to stargaze...kids and dogs, families galore... Meadows shimmer with colors, awash in wildflowers. Skyline Divide IS at its flower peak. I've always wanted to do it on a clear day in flower season, bugs or not and after some 25 years since I was there (in the fall), I succeeded with some friends. Bugs were definitely out, but it wasn't the horror show I've heard about (and I am a bug magnet).
While there were surely hundreds (or so it seemed) on the ridge, three of the initial five of us went on and on towards Chowder Basin and barely saw folks. I've got to give a lot of thanks to Jerry, the "Punmeister" and Anne for the patience to let me linger long enough for the light to improve - after all, I carried the dSLR and tripod. I also lost - and found - the stupid POLA filter at least six times when it insisted on falling off. This IS the primo time to go. Flowers couldn't be better, views were spectacular and lingering snowfields were soft, small and easily traversed (we dropped under one). If you've ever thought of hiking here, do so. Come early or stay late for the best light. Better yet: backpack here. Any takers? (The hiker formerly known as HikerVal) |

I had to do this today. Reading the most recent trip reports on this hike convinced me, so I hit the road early and headed north. Arrived at the trailhead at 9am and started the climb. The trail is in great condition, nice tread, no mud, a nice grade. Its not too steep, but enough at times to get you breathing hard. Starting early the trail is shaded and cool until the top. There is no water source along the trail now, however.
Once you reach the clearing, wow, you are greeted by the expanse of Baker, fields of wild flowers and views as far as you can see. Lucky for the dogs there were still big patches of snow to cool off on. Probably won't be around much longer though. The snow didn't impede travel on the trail. Others have reported a lot of bugs on this trail. Not sure if it was because I slathered up in bug juice beforehand, or the early start but didn't have a problem at all with bugs on the way up. There were buzzing flies and bees later on the way down but never bothered me. Just gave my little dog something to do on the descent. I think he caught a few, too. This was a popular destination today. A lot of folks were on the trail but there is so much room it never felt crowded. |

The hike was great! This is probably my favorite area on baker. At 3 miles the trail forks and there is no sign. Make sure yours going up and staying on the ridgeline. I had to backtrack about a mile.. to get back on track. I hiked this trail last year and the fog was heavy, so i couldn't see the scenery. The wild flowers are awesome! If you have binoculars bring them. I got pretty close to chowder ridge and there were tons of baby and mama goat tracks. Along with the shedding wool all over the snow. I could smell them but didn't see any. Im sure from a distance i would have seen the herd. I hiked 3/4 of a miles past the end of the trail. Since it goes all the way to baker... if you go alittle further you will probably have the area to yourself. There are some good technical rock climbs and some decent slopes to mess around with your ice axe if your feeling creative. The sunset was breathtaking on this sweet clear day. Personally i feel obligated to visit the high mountains every week since summer doesn't last long. On the way back down on saturday i ran into 40 plus people. Leave early! Get out and explore!

This is a marvelous hike, well-worth the bumpy ride over 12 miles on the unpaved forest road. Just take it slowly -- an ordinary car can make it without difficulty; the road surface has no snow, but it does have a rough texture with occasional potholes. As of today, Thurs., Aug. 9, 2012, the trail up was essentially snow-free; up on the crest of the divide there are some patches of fairly soft snow, which were easy to cross. We brought ski poles and they definitely were worthwhile having. The trail goes up through beautiful woods, and offers the hiker a good stretch without being too taxing -- definitely a good choice for both children and seniors. (If you happen to be an athlete who can sprint all the way up, it's still worth it for the views). Ah yes, the views -- FANTASTIC! When we reached the top of the divide, we first took the trail to the left and explored the meadows and views in that area for about 20 minutes. Then we headed south, towards Mt. Baker, and walked perhaps a mile, skirting the first big knoll. One nice thing about this hike is that it's worth the effort even if one only climbs to the top of the trail; the views and abundant wildflowers in the meadows near the top are spectacular. From there, one can hike south up to about two miles, with ever-changing views along the way. But even if one doesn't go all the way to the southern end, it's still an unforgettable hike. As for bugs, there were a few, but they really didn't detract much from our enjoyment of the hike.

Gorgeous hike! Once I heard the wildflowers had started to bloom, I came up here as soon as I could. I've been wanting to do this one for a few years now, and I don't think I could have chosen a better time to go.
The 12-mile drive from the highway is long, bumpy, and slow-going--especially for vehicles with lower clearance like mine. Fortunately, it gets you pretty far up (trail head elev. 4400 feet), saving you from what would otherwise be a long and steep trek up the mountain. Lots of cars parked in the parking lot today, even on a weekday. The trail gets right down to business and immediately starts ascending up several flights of stairs. There aren't really any switchbacks for the first mile, so it gets kind of steep in some parts. Things get a little easier once you get to the switchbacks, where the trail starts to open up to small meadows. Just taste of what is yet to come. The trail crests at the 2-mile mark, immediately opening up to wide, open, wildflower-laden meadows. Mount Baker dominates the southern skyline, while majestic Mount Shuksan can be seen across the valley. We were originally going to continue on farther down the trail toward Baker, but we were content with just spending an hour and a half enjoying the meadows. Although there were quite a few hikers on the trail today, there is a lot of space for people to spread out, so it never felt crowded. There also wasn't much snow. Aside from a few patches here and there, it might all be melted out by next week. |

Great day for a hike. The flowers were out in great numbers once you crest the ridge, but the flies were out in great numbers from the trailhead on up. Bring your best repellent, and still be prepared to be buzzed every time you stop.

I finally hiked the North Cascades above 6,000'without traction devices! The unpaved road to the Skyline Divide TH is long and bumpy, but the trail to the Divide is soft and gentle. This hike is worth every effort.
There are patches of snow intermittently starting at 5,200', but the trail is easily discernible. When you crest the ridge at 1.9 miles, the view of Baker is stunning. If you hike toward Baker, the hillsides have some snow, but the snow-covered areas can be traversed with ease. The view back toward the point where the trail enters the ridge are excellent as are the views in nearly every direction. There are many different types of flowers beginning to bloom, but the flowers will require 2-3 weeks to reach their peak. I was most impressed with the fields of Glacier Lilies this trip. I was the first one to reach the Divide and I did not encounter any other hikers until I started hiking out. I met 20 hikers coming up the trail. When I left the parking lot, six cars with multiple passengers passed me on their way to the TH. This destination was popular today and rightly so. I hiked to the first peak past the second knoll on the trail and reached an elevation of 6,090'. The trail was seriously covered with snow beyond that point. The snow fields are soft, so they should melt soon. Today's hike reaffirmed my feeling that the Divide is one of the best hikes in the North Cascades. |

This is an awesome hike. The gravel road to the trail head is is good shape(12.3 miles of gravel) and takes you up to about 4200 ft. The trail starts up with a good push and after about 30-40 minutes gets a bit easier. There were a few snow patches that I went over in tennis shoes and poles with no problems. Made it up to the ridge in about an hour and 20 minutes. The snow lillies are in full bloom, a few lupine, purple daises and various other flowers are out. Views of Shukston, were unbelievable, and Mt. Baker played hide n seek with the clouds. When you are cresting the final knoll to the top, it feels as though you are in The Sound of Music!
Short hike--very doable for almost all levels of hikers. Be ware the bugs(horseflies) are starting to come out--Deet 40% is a must!! |

I managed to get through the remaining snow blocking the road with my jeep. I think the road will be clear by tomorrow. There's still significant snow on the trail however. I actually ended up losing the trail and had to turn around.
What's with the bees on this trail being so aggressive? They always like to hover around me no matter what time of year it is or what I'm wearing or what I smell like. That doesn't really happen to me on other trails. Edit: The snow is still a problem as of 6/19/2012 |

The best high country ridge walk I've ever enjoyed. Staggering vistas.
Conditions: Trail was icy starting about halfway to the ridge ... trekking poles and traction devices will make the going easier. I lacked the latter, and now plan to invest in some. Mixed snow and heather at the start of the ridge, shading into solid snow as you go up. A word of warning: about a mile into the ridge, in the solid snow section, there is a prominent fork marked with a huge cairn. If you want the ridge route, DON'T follow the majority of boot prints going to the left. That way goes up the valley. Instead, go right, up to the nearby ridge, where you will find a path in the snow. I went the valley route and wound up ascending a really steep and snowy slope to regain the ridge, not fun. Came down the 'right' way which was much better. Of course, all this may change with the next snow that obliterates all traces of trail! |

Wow. This was an amazing hike. It took us 4 hrs to do the whole hike with a couple extra jaunts in the mix. The views were amazing, the wildflowers breath taking and the misquitoes and flies annoying. Take bug spray, off with Deet (which I hate) worked very well.
We brought 10 bottles of water and drank every one. A pair of ski poles or a walking stick was very helpful and of course the PBJ sandwiches were a wonderful treat. Oh don't forget your camera and the binoculars, you won't be sorry. Most of all take time to relax and enjoy. It's a long hike down...... |

This is one of the nicest alpine ridge hikes in the state. What makes this hike so enjoyable is the 360 degree view that you have continuously along the 3 miles of ridge walking. Flowers are still blooming heavily in the meadows (unusual for September). There are still a moderate number of biting flies, especially in the lush meadows. Bugs are much fewer along the more barren ridge near the end of the trail. The very end of the trail (about 5mi from the trailhead) ascends very steeply up a goat trail to point near the west end of Chowder Ridge. Some exposure here but no special skills needed. Poles very useful on this section. This area feels more remote since most people don't come this far. The view from Chowder Ridge give you a close up view of Baker and looks down on the heavily crevassed Coleman glacier. I also decided to enjoy the section of trail that goes north from the ridge intersection with the forest ascent. This section is almost flat and filled with flowers. Photography was much better in the evening. Next time I will go up to see the sunset and return with a headlight. Conditions are hazy due to the 5 or 6 wild fires burning aroung the state currently. There is no running water on any part of the trail so bring plenty or plan to melt snow (plenty of patches here and there). It is almost a 3 hour drive to the trailhead from south Bellevue. The dirt road is long but in good condition. Milanos in the town of Glacier has awesome pasta if you like tons of garlic.

This hike was spectacular. I read the description and all of the trip reports and I knew it was going to be fantastic but words can't describe being on top of the world, surrounded by acres of wildflowers, perfect blue skies and a view from Puget Sound to the Cascade Mountain Range.
Our plan was to arrive at 9:30 am but the trip from Seattle was longer than we anticipated so we pulled into the trailhead at 11:30. The parking lot was full but there was still room to park above the trail head. The trail is short and steep up to the top. The bugs weren't too bad until you got to the snow packs melting near the top. For this old body, it was pretty strenuous but others were passing us by easily. There are still spots of snow here and there near the top and they melt into the trail which leaves a few mud holes. Coming around the corner and seeing Mt. Baker looming above you is breathtaking. Our group ate lunch quietly amidst the wilflowers then climbed up the south knoll to get a better view of Baker and Puget Sound. I thought the trail to the top was steep, but the trail to the top of the knoll is straight up. Once we got to the top we could see forever! We saw fossils of muscles and clams in the rocks on top of the knoll, a red tail hawk, chipmunk and a falcon. Pack plenty of water, there is no water source for you or for your 4 legged friends except for snow pack. All in all according to our gps, we hiked a total of 5.45 miles round trip. The trip back was much faster but very hard on the knees and toes because of the decline. When we got back to the parking lot, 2 of the 3 cars in our party had a flat tire. The road is long, rough and bumpy with lots of loose and packed rocks on it so take it slow. We determined that the flats were from the rocks in the road. |

Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan -- a perfect way to end a summer vacation. 10 cars at the trail head at 9:15, 40+ at 1:30. The first hour was a grinder but leveled up near the treeline. The first glimpse of Baker was energizing, the second exhilarating. At the top was a stunning view, unmatched in beauty. Baker and Shuksan were pristine in fresh snow, the sky was blue, the wild flowers in bloom, a slight breeze, 70 degrees, no bugs and Vancouver, BC was visible to the northwest.
If there is any MUST hike, it's Skyline Ridge -- so easy, even 4-1/2 year-old girls can climb it! Any ideal family hike, a little tough at first but rewarding beyond expression at the top. One small patch of snow on the trail, some bugs while hiking, and lots of hikers to greet on the way down. No water available so bring a bottle or two. Now back to the 180 day grinder. ;-) |

Beautiful day to start the holiday weekend. The flowers are out on the ridge, the remaining snow patches are small and simple to cross, the bugs were minimal and the scenery was great. We could see the nearby Cascades, the Canadian mountains and towns, and all the way over to the Olympics.
Of course lots of people and even more dogs. There were over 50 cars in the parking lot. But its a holiday and several other nearby roads are closed, so this was a great place for many people to enjoy the fabulous day up there. |

Beautiful day, good trail conditions, wildflowers blooming and amazing 360 views of the amazing Northern Cascades. Another big plus was no bugs, which was a big change from Goat Mt. where we hiked last week. With so much of the summer lost to snow covered inaccessible trails, it is wonderful to have this bonus time of great weather. There were a few snow areas, but they were easy to manage. Since it was such a great day and a holiday weekend, we expected lots of people on the trail, but it was fine as everyone had big smiles! We hiked about 4 miles in and back in about 4hrs.

I changed my mind about what trail I was going to hike and decided to head to The Skyline Ridge Trail off Highway 542 East of Bellingham, Washington. This was part of my Hike 35 of 50 at age 50 I planned this year. A spectacular day for a hike. It took about 2 1/2 hours to get to the trailhead. The forest road to turn right on is just past Glacier Vistor Center in the little town of Glacier off Highway 542. Once you turn on to this road be prepared to make a quick left off this gravel road on to another gravel road. If you don't you will be heading to Helitrope Ridge Trail near Coleman Glacier. Take the left for Skyline Ridge Trail. This road takes you 12.8 miles up hill to elevation of 4400 feet. This road has some big rocks but not too bad. The trail is up the hill on the left from the bathroom. You will hike through about 2 1/2 miles of forest before you start to see some views to the north but not long after that you will get to the ridge and the views from there are spectacular. There are big meadows of wildflowers to see but be careful to stay on the trail as much as possible so as not to damage the meadows. This would be a great place to wake up too on and overnight camping trip. Great views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan and surrounding mountains. This trail is in great shape and can be done by all skill levels including kids but I do not advocate pets. Personally I would never take my dogs on any trails. Come check this place out over Labor Day Weekend. You will not be disappointed. Checkout my videos of this trail and others I have done on my youtube channel at lmm3181 or click on these direct links. They are safe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsiopL3l2s8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3olPWrj4S3M Get your kids out of the house, off the televison set , away from the videos games, off the cell phones and computers. It will change their life and how they feel about getting back to nature. Take Care and enjoy your hiking!!! Mike |

This is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Northern Cascades and it is at its peak now. Yes, the unpaved road is long and bumpy, and you have to hike through two miles of average forest to get to the ridge; but it is worth it once you reach the ridge. The views are non-stop for the next 2.5 miles. The wildflowers are magnificent in the meadows and they change with elevation. There were only six hikers on the excellent tread this morning, but there were five times that many this afternoon. The clouds made the mountains play peek-a-boo, but there were some unobstructed views. Bugs were not a problem. There are snowfields at 3.5 miles. There was no evidence of anyone going beyond 4.0 miles. I recommend turning around at mile 3.0 where there is a large pile of rocks. This is a great hike!

As a previous posting noted, the 12-mile gravel road to the trailhead is not the smoothest. The rough spots are mainly from the repeated washouts and repairs over the last few years. Even though I didn't get there super early, there were no other cars at the parking lot. The trail has been logged out, and the first snow patch shows up about a mile in. Once cresting the ridge, you'll be met with more snow patches. PLEASE STAY ON THE SNOW WHERE POSSIBLE, rather than eroding more of the fragile meadows going back and forth from snow to muddy trail to meadow. I went as far as the second 6560-foot knob on Chowder Ridge and had the place to myself, except for 2 camera-shy marmots. With glasses, I was able to spot several ant-like climbing parties against the snow on Mt. Baker. A great 9.3 mile round-trip, with no one around till I got back to the ridge junction. If you're after flowers, High Divide has this place beat all to heck this year.

Great day hike near Glacier, Washington. We started up around 10AM and made it back around 2:30.
Wanted to post to make sure people understand you have to drive up a 12 mile rough road with limited space; sometimes only room for one car. For the most part, everyone we encountered was cooperative, but drive carefully: some blind turns and "over-enthusiastic" motorists. A sturdy vehicle is a plus. Warm weather and shade in the two mile trail up through the forest brought bugs and more BUGS with appetites! My girlfriend's arms tell the tale this morning, even with ample spray applied before our ascent. Absolutely enjoyable day with stunning views and friendly hikers throughout. Trekking poles would be advisable if you plan to keep on through the first meadow and towards the hills beyond. There is still some remaining melting snow on the ridge line trail. We saw many groups with dogs, families and hikers in all age groups. I waited for this hike all summer, and it was well worth it! |

There is a very large tree down across the trail at the beginning, right past the register. It's still a little muddy, and at about 1 mile up the trail is covered in about 1ft of snow. It's slippery, and there are pink flags marking the trail but we did not go further as we had no poles with us. It's a little buggy too. Totally bummed this trail is not melted out yet. THere is also a large sinkhole that is currently marked with a pink flag when you are about 1/4 mile from the parking area. beware.

It's been a number of years since I last hiked Skyline Divide. largely because the road there was closed for some time. I'm glad I returned to it yesterday as it was the most spectacular hike I've taken this year. It's a long drive there and the last eight miles of the 13 mile road are particularly potholed and bumpy. But it is well worth the drive. We were lucky to have taken the opportunity to hike on the last day this week of good weather. Three weeks earlier we had climbed the 4.5 miles up from the Mr. Baker Highway to Excelsior Pass and by the time we reached it Mt. Baker was completely covered by clouds. Yesterday, the view was perfect. When we broke out of the forest onto the Divide, the views were amazing. We wandered along the trail up and down and climbed a steep peaklet that took us to about 6500 feet elevation, where we had our lunch. Then we returned back to the junction where the trail up from the road reaches the divide, but this time took the other direction (to the left). This turned out to be the most wonderful part of the whole hike for me. I had neglected to explore this eastern section of the Divide, and I'm glad I finally did so. First of all, the crowds disappear, and you suddenly find yourself in complete solitude in meadows filled with more flowers than I saw on the usual route. The lupine were particularly abundant. Moreover, the views of Shuksan and Baker are consistently in front of you the whole way. We kept thinking the trail would end, but it wandered along the ridge for about a half a mile until it reached an obvious end at a precipice. We returned to the junction and then made a quick descent to the car--what a great day!

My friend J and I, plus the Wonder Pup, headed up to Skyline Divide on this beautiful Monday. We were car #3, and we only saw maybe ten groups the whole day. In fact, there were a couple of spots along the ridge where we couldn't see anyone for miles.
The trail is in great shape. And just when you think you're *done* with steepness (it's not that bad, really), you surface into meadows of wildflowers. Washington Husky fans, delight...purple and white everywhere, with gold accents! Once you pass the Mt. Baker Wilderness sign, you're just a few feet away from cresting the ridge. Be prepared, as Mt. Baker will smack you in the face. We turned right, and followed the crest in the direction of Chowder Ridge. The trail guide says there are six knolls, and we made it to the fourth before time sent us back. Most of the folks we met stayed within the area of the first knoll or two, and believe me, if you want views, you'll get plenty from there. The trail junctions were clear; the one that could be difficult at 3.5 miles is well marked with cairns. For the basin, take the well-used trail to the left, and for more ridge, scramble up the scree to the right. The trail will become obvious at the top of the slope. Don't expect to make great time as you walk along the ridge. This is a place to exercise the camera, and just be grateful for such a beautiful place. Road Notes: While the road is only 12.4 miles long, expect to spend 35-45 minutes driving, based on your car. It is a bit rough at the beginning, then smoother for awhile. You'll pass a couple of privies (better to use these than to wait and endure the upper part of the road), and a bridge, a little less than halfway up. After this, expect medium-large potholes, rough road, and much slower going. I was glad for my 4Runner, but it can be done with a lower-clearance vehicle with good suspension...just expect to take longer. Bug Notes: Maybe I'm just tasty, but I used 33% DEET, and wanted 40%; I re-sprayed three or four times. Most of the bugs were black flies. Just bring the spray and enjoy. Water Notes: There is only one tiny stream left on the trail, and a few small dog-chewed snow patches along the ridge (don't plan on these for much longer). We were on the trail 6.5 hours, and I went through nearly 4 liters. In fact, the last available water is in Marblemount, unless you filter from the river. Camera Notes: Make sure your battery is charged and your card has lots of room :-) |

My fellow trudgers and I headed up the Skyline Divide trail on Friday morning. Many others (with their dogs and even “pack goats”) had the same idea. The road to the trailhead definitely has its rough spots (big potholes, etc.) but our trusty Toyota Corolla and its patient, skilled driver handled it just fine.
The trail is steep in places but also has a few level stretches to catch one’s breath. It was a warm, clear day – a beauty for hiking – but we could have done without the swarms of hateful black flies. These despicable creatures seem to delight in thumbing their noses at any amount of insect repellent you put on. Fortunately, once we were on the ridge there was a nice breeze, which kept the flies at bay (sort of) while we ate lunch and basked in the truly awesome scenery. The meadows are currently full of lupine, sitka valerian, and mountain bistort and the air is heavy with their sweet scent. The heathers are just starting to bloom. This is one of the most glorious hiking destinations in the North Cascades! The views are astounding and worth all the sweat and fly swatting on the way up. (If you want to avoid some of the flies, get a very early start.) |

Arrived a little before 11:00 to the trailhead, and found about 30 cars. Once on the trail, though, it did not seem like that many people. Gorgeous day as we got up to the ridge and hiked out to the second knoll, with a grand view of Baker, and a spectacular panorama of Shuksan and surrounding peaks. Wonderful solitude the whole time we relaxed and had lunch on top of the knoll. We were visited by a falcon flying by at eye level, stunning butterfies, and a marmot. Saw quite a few people arriving as we descended. Arrived back at the car about 3:00.

A spectacular hike that, when you break out onto the Divide, makes you want to sing like Julie Andrews: "The hills are alive!" This hike is eye-candy and once you come out on the Divide, the views only get better and better.
Only half a dozen cars were at the trailhead when we started at 10:30 am and we saw only 4 other parties on the trail all day. The trail starts with a moderate calf-stretching ascent through sun-dappled forest, climbing 800 ft in the first half hour. Then it eases up for the next 1500 ft and suddenly you're at Skyline Divide, where your eyes can feast on expansive views of Mt. Shuksan and Baker and the rest of the North Cascade range. Meadows flush with pink heather light up the valley below. We climbed the steep 6215-ft knoll east of the trail and descended the much gentler back side along a well-worn boot path, to fields of purple lupine, bright yellow stonecrop, orange-red paintbrush, white and pink heather. A great lunch spot. Rejoining the trail, we continued on to the fork at 3.5 miles (5900 ft) and took the high road (follow the large cairns) up to the high point of 6563 ft, then followed the undulating trail to the 6300-ft saddle near the base of Chowder Ridge, for glorious views of Mt. Baker, Shuksan, and the lush green valley below. At the saddle, pedicularis, white paintbrush, phlox, buttercups, stonecrop, red paintbrush, and harebells were out in abundance. The biting flies were a bit pesky at first, until Misnomer pulled out her magic bug dope--a citrus-eucalyptus spray--and they magically all disappeared (no kidding!). I'm buying a gallon of that stuff when I get home. A late afternoon thunderstorm started hailing on us just after we descended the saddle. A bright flash, followed by the loudest thunderclap I have ever heard, revealed a lightning strike about 0.5 mile away, with two trees temporarily on fire. There is only one snow patch to navigate, and that is on the trail just below the 6215-ft knoll. The snow is packed but starting to feel mushy. STATS: Distance: 10 miles round-trip to saddle Elevation gain (to saddle): 2163 ft Grade: easy to moderate Map: Green Trails Mt. Baker 13 Bugs: many biting flies, a few mosquitoes Snow: one patch you can avoid by climbing up the knoll |

The road is open to the trailhead!!! The road is in good condition with expected washboard, pot holes etc. Even though it is only 13 miles off of the highway, expect to spend 35-45 minutes driving on a single one lane gravel road. On the way down we saw a 4 runner in the ditch so take it easy.
Overall the trail is in great condition. You will cross a few small areas of rapidly fleeting patchy snow. The bugs were moderate with few mosquitoes, but I would recommend to bring bug spray. My wife and I are fairly slow hikers and it took 1:15 minutes to reach the top, or first meadow. Note we took our two dogs and water is sparse on this hike. Be sure to pack your own. We fed them some snow about 2/3 of the way up and there is a small stream and pool which could dry up about 1/4 mile from the top. You should definitely go as soon as possible before everyone finds out the road and trail are open. |

Ok, I know I did this hike a month ago but a friend wanted to do it today and what can I say... I am really glad I did. We did about 10 miles round trip and the weather was perfect for hiking. A bit on the cool side, fall is falling, we were hoping for some color but not too much up there yet. Mostly, I wanted to share some of the awesome peek a boo views of Mt. Baker. What a treat when she finally peeked out of the clouds !! Happy hiking |

Today was a great day for a hike! My husband and I were planning on hiking Ptarmigan Ridge, but Mount Baker Highway was closed at mile post 35 so we decided to do this hike instead.
The road to get to the trail is a 12 mile gravel road. The first part of the road is in great condition, one of the best I've seen. After you cross the bridge there are a lot of pot holes, but they are avoidable with some creative driving.I saw a lot of cars make it up today with little trouble. If we had known this was the hike we would do we would have brought our dog. For those of you who have dogs be aware that there are many dogs on the trail, most of which we saw were off-lead. I must have seen at least 15 dogs today off leash and maybe 2 on. There were very few bugs bothering us on the hike. I think I only got bitten once, which is really good for me. The National Forest website rated this trail as "more difficult" and I would have to agree with this rating. There were people of all levels hiking the trail, the only ones giving advice seemed to be the ones that would tell us that we would be there in "15 minutes" after about a mile in. I don't know who is really hiking the trail in that time. I'm in pretty good shape, but I needed quite a few small water breaks. The trail is pretty much an uphill climb for 2 miles. I was wishing I had one of those nifty hiking poles that everyone else had on the way up. Since we thought we would be hiking a different trail my husband and I made the call to wear sneakers. This is definitely a hiking-boot hike if you have them. I wish I had the support for walking over/up/down the rocks along the trail as well as for when I stubbed my toes on roots and things. The view is definitely worth the 2 mile climb. My camera makes files that are too big to upload here but you can see from other hiker's photos what I'm talking about. You can see Baker up close and every other high peak and Mountain in every direction. I really do recommend it! |

There's a good trip report from 8/16, so I'll just update a few things.
- the rock in the road has been moved. The road is rough but any passenger car should make it up just fine. - I didn't see a blow-down on the trail, that must have been quickly cleared - bugs are back - why so late, flies? There were huge bee-like horseflies doing laps around our heads the entire way, plus some smaller deer flies that got a couple successful bites in. We were wishing we had brought our light-weight long-sleeved shirts and pants, it would have made the hike much more comforable. - flowers are all gone now, just a lot of lush green meadows left - berries are peaking, with a lot to eat but some starting to be past their prime - we were hoping for very clear skies since it rained on Saturday, but the wildfires are taking their toll and it was hazy to the north, east and west. Views south towards Mt Baker were more clear. This is a great hike! Takes nearly 3 hours to drive up from Seattle but it's worth it. |

Last night at the last minute I decided to do SkyLine Divide... I am sooooo thankful that I did. I arrived at the TH parking lot at 9:00am and was the third car there.
The road to the TH is rough but no problem for any car. A rather large rock fell onto the road last night but it can be driven around, you do have to get a bit close to the edge of the road though. This was called in and was supposed to be moved off the road but it was still there when I came down the road. The hike to the Divide starts out a little muddy and there is one blowdown that can be fairly easily negotiated. The trail to the divide is not very long but the elevation gain is a nice workout. The roots were still wet on my way up and a little on the slippery side. All in all the trail was in good shape. And... there were no bugs at all on the way up to the Divide... yay !!! I basically had the trial quite literally to myself. Did not run into another human until just about at the top and they were coming back down. About 30 mins. later I had a nice conversation with the only other fellow hiker that I ran into in the morning as I was heading out the divide. That was it for humans until about 1:00 in the afternoon. This was a first for me on this trail and truly an awesome treat. After 1:00, more and more people had caught up to where I was. Everyone I ran into was just as mesmerized by it all as well. The pictures really honestly did not do the scenery justice. The flowers were beautiful, the views were spectacular and where I had lunch with a totally unobstructed panoramic view, I almost had to pinch myself to bring me back to earth... LOL It truly was breath taking !! |

When we left the trailhead by 9:30am there was only 5 other cars. Immediately, the hike was a grueling uphill climb which constituted the majority of the overall altitude gain. The bugs and flies were relentless too, so we had to slather on the Jungle Juice (mmm DEET) which put them at bay to a certain degree. Closer to the top, there were some switchbacks through fields of grass and flowers in bloom.
When we finally reached the top of the ridge, we were rewarded by vast 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and Baker. We wondered over to another neighboring peak, snapped some more pictures, ate a snack and then headed back down the mountain. On the return trip, we passed dozens of people and the bugs had quadrupled in numbers, making for a miserable descent. Thankfully we had started hiking early enough in the morning where the 85F+ heat wasn’t intolerable. Arrived back at the car by 12, ate some lunch and drove down the long mountain road (while cursing the dozen idiot drivers who don’t understand the rules of the road for a single lane mtn road!). |

Yes, I was the chowder head headed to Chowder Ridge with a full pack in the furnace-like heat on Saturday afternoon. Having camped Friday night at Yellow Aster Butte, it took some time to hike down to my car, find Glacier Peak Road (#39) and the quick left turn onto the twelve mile uphill road (#37) to the crowded Skyline Trail parking lot. My biggest fear had been finding the last safe parking space, but the 1 pm heat slapped me into worrying about something else. Fortunately, almost all of the couple of hundred day-hikers, and five or six groups of backpackers were ahead of me, so only a few people had to wait for the dotted lines to pass by my slowly moving butt. Within minutes, I found a shocking flaw in the special theory of relativity: at high temperatures, time doesn’t speed up when you slow down, it crawls to a stop. Moreover, observers from every perspective confirm that it took me almost forever to get to the ridge. After that, the views almost made me forget about time: meadowlands filled with lupine and valerian, Baker, Shuksan, Nooksack Ridge, and the Skagit Range. People were almost as plentiful as flowers, and mosquitos outnumbered them all, but the scenery drew me on to a tent site just before the unmarked split, where the trail to Chowder Basin skirts left, and the less obvious path up Skyline Ridge towards Chowder Ridge climbs steeply up. |

Is Thursday, August 14th a holiday? There were at least 60 people hiking the Skyline Divide Trail today and we all had a great time. The approach road is long but good. The trail was snow free for at least the first 4 miles and the blow-downs have all been cleared. The meadows were filled with flowers and the views were fabulous. (We could even see I-5 heading towards the Canadian Border from our lunch spot.) |

A perfect day for this hike. There were some small but very passable snow patches, and some mud in the woods coming back down after it had warmed up and been trampled over. The wildflowers were spectacular up top; lupine, bistort, daisy, penstemon, paintbrush, and many more. |

The road to the Skyline divide is in good shape except for the usual chuckholes. We ran into snow patches at the 3,900 foot level. Some were 2 -3 foot deep. A large tree blocked the road about a mile from the parking area and we walked the rest of the way. Right at the beginning of the trail there was a lot of snow but it was not hard to find the trail. About 70% of the trail is bare. There were some windfalls. I turned back at the 4,900 foot level because of time constraint but I think I could have made it to the Skyline Divide without any great problems. |

Despite this being a familiar place, plenty of dragons roared to keep it interesting. This ridge is austere and very exposed; nothing but “… disaster camps in a storm” as Ira Spring & Harvey Manning declare. Also, passage from Skyline Divide to Chowder Ridge involves a scramble on narrow catwalks of rock, requiring attentive steps. |

Good news. The road to the Skyline Divide is finally open after roads repairs from the winter 06 storms. There are still over a dozen tree falls across the trail which you go over, under or around. But a clearing crew is supposed to start soon. The weather was great but I started late, around 12:15pm. After an hour in the woods where some humongous mushrooms were growing, I finally emerged unto the Skyline ridge. The views of Mt Baker, the meadows and Canadian peaks were tremendous! Had a late lunch on the 'knoll' were you can get great photographs and almost a 360deg view. Most people consider this the end of the trail but I continued on as the views get better. Unless you intend to camp or go down to Chowder Basin, bring you own water as there is no water on this trail. Got the top of ridge around 4:30pm and the trail end was about 1/2hr or more away but too tired to continue and need to get back before sunset; but took some great pics of the panorama views. Back at the parking lot by 7:30pm. See http://picasaweb.google.com/steve.d.podleski/2007SkylineDivideHike for some pics of the hike |

My first effort on the trail. The Skyline trail does not care about the little touches of civilization, like switchbacks, until you are almost to the top. The trail starts in forest and only opens up near the top. Peak flowers are only in the meadows as you near the top. Once you are at the ridgeline there is a lovely view of Shucksan (if you have a cloudless day.) Follow the up and down trail S to views of Baker (on more cloudless days that I had.) Still a few Glacier lilies struggling to bloom (Yes we know its August,) some wild strawberry, white paintbrush, and phlox on the ridgeline. Valaria various yellow composits, corn lilies, lupine, and bistort on the west facing meadows. |

Not much to add to two prior reports except that we were utterly disappointed by this year's flower show. Too early or a bad year? Go figure. The thirten miles' road trip on the very dusty FR 39 requires a mandatory carwash afterwards. A forest crew was in the process of installing a new toilet at the trailhead. This is a busy trail even during the week, with the views on top no great surprise. One hike to scratch of our to-do-list. Bugs not a problem on top of the ridge. Temperature at 79. One blow-down to get around. |

This is a beautiful ridge hike, even on a cloudy day. Our hope was to set up camp on Saturday in Chowder Basin, and then continue to Hadley Peak. But since the clouds never lifted, and it got foggy, we stopped 2 miles before the summit and returned to camp. This trip starts on the Skyline Divide trail. About 2.5 miles in there is a grassy knoll on the left with a great, but dry, campsite. A little furter is another nice site on the ridge, but it is also dry. You reach the end of the maintained trail in 3.5 miles. The left fork is very well used, and leads to Chowder Basin. There is one nice, established site here, with running water. The right fork climbs a short, steep rocky section to attain the ridge. We continued for another 1.5 miles where there is a tarn and a flat area to camp. (Peggy Goldman's GPS pt. #3). We will definitely return in better weather and continue on Chowder Ridge all the way to Hadley Peak. |

The view from the top is approaching peak fall color. Probably another week or two will do the trick. In addition to the changing foliage, there were even a few lingering wildflowers. Small, purple bell-like clusters. Don't rush your time along the ridge, but take time to enjoy the culmination of your hard work...even if clouds obscure Baker and other nearby peaks. Do wear hiking boots...the trail through the forest is muddy and downright slick. Trekking poles will help you maintain balance in the slick spots. Also, big plaudits to the Forest Service personnel. They were hard at work doing what they could to improve the trail. Also, thanks to each and every dog owner I passed. They kept their dogs under control and cleaned up after them when they answered nature's call (the dogs, that is). Granted, not all dogs (or owners) are as well behaved, but experience has taught me that the whining about dogs on trails is generally undeserved. |

Skyline Divide would be a spectacular hike in clear weather. Unfortunately, the Pacific Northwest fog descended to about 6,000 feet by 10 a.m. Since I prefer not to hike alone in the fog near timberline, I turned around at 6,300 feet which was significantly short of my goal of reaching Chowder Ridge. The views would have been superb. |

This was my second attempt at this hike and once again Mount Baker seemed to become completely encased in clouds just as I broke above treeline onto the ridge. I saw Baker while driving through Glacier on 542, and again on the drive home, but not at all in between. Furthermore this seemed to be the only substantial cloud cover in the North Cascades area - any other hike would have been a better choice. For me this is par the course this summer - bar far the worst for photography that I've had in 7 years of hiking in the Cascades & Olympics. I blame the lack of snowfall over the winter and some bad luck like I had today. |

The newly reopened road to the trailhead seemed long (about 14 miles)and steep, but more likely I'd driven too many miles on similar roads in the previous few days. The trail starts in lovely forest climbing 1400 feet in about 2 miles to open out onto a lovely, grass covered ridge top with knock your sox off views of Baker, Shuksan, American Border peaks and more. It was a lovely, sunny day with just about the right amount of sun. Definitely a day for lying around on lunch box knoll after a very satisfying wander along the ridgetop. When we returned to the very full, hot parking lot, we were glad we'd had an early morning start. Plenty of huckleberries, virtually no bugs, one detourable tree across the trail. This was a really great hike with maximum rewards for very little effort. |

No problem with the drive to the trail head, road was in great shape, as was the trail. It never stoped raining and we had low cloud cover, in other words, we did it to get out of the day to day BS. Another fantastic hike. The meadows along the way and at the divide were blooming like crazy with wildflowers. The trail is in great shape and the views are surely the finest the North Cascades has to offer. My 5 year old was in awe and could not get enough. ("" Daddy, that mountain is really BIG!"") He gave it 2 big thumbs up. The trails beyond the divide were in great shape and clear as far as you can see, toward Hadley Peak. Lots of bugs on the trail, but not many in the divide. Note for you overnighters, there was no water and very little snow that was easily accessable near the divide. |

A group from WNPS headed up to skyline divide to see what was growing on a beautiful monday. Still lots of folks up there. The trail is great and short - two miles or so to the meadows and about 1500'. What a bang for the buck! The meadows glow blue, white and gold with lupine, bistort, valerian and potentilla. Awesome views everyway. We could see the smoke from the Colville fire. The only downside was the zillions of bugs everywhere, especially in the woods, but in the meadows too. Fortunately, they didn't bite much but bring the bug juice. Highly recommended for colors and views. |

Great rewards for such a short hike. John and I ditched the rest of our tournament playing soccer buddies to preserve our injured legs for next week's hike on the Wonderland trail. Instead, we headed here for flowers and views. We weren't disappointed. After a 2 mile climb through the trees, we hit the meadows and the views, which expanded with every step. We got to a sidetrail, dropped our daypacks, and wandered to the left through fields of flowers. Lots of lupine, some paintbrush (both white and Indian), and tons of other flowers whose names I can't remember. We got back on the main trail kept going to the very end (another 2 miles or so) to Chowder Basin. Sat by a nice waterfall and shared our lunch with about 1 million black flies and mosquitoes. |

Skyline Divide is a wonderful hike for views, flowers and birds. The flowers are just starting. Took my mom up the Skyline Divide today. Snow at 1.7 ish miles, just before you get to the ridge. The trail begins 12 miles up fire road 37 in beautiful, lush forest. The trail, an easily graded one, climbs steadily to the ridge, twice passing through meadows of green grass and wildflowers before switching back onto the ridge, where the views of Baker and Shuksan are i'm sure phenominal. Only, today, they were clouded over and not too visible. Oh well, the great lunch we packed was well worth the hike up and the meadow, which will be absolutely packed with wildflowers here in a couple of weeks, was beautiful. On Saturday afternoon when we left the trailhead you could drive to within about 1/4 mile of the official trailhead at 4400 feet, 12 miles up a gravel road from the Mt. Baker highway. By Sunday at about 5:30 when we got back you could drive right to the trailhead. Trail is in good shape with one major tree about 1/2 mile in that you could crawl under without your pack. |

Saturday was a fabulous day for the trail. Visibility was very good though it was a bit hot. Bring lots of water because we only crossed one small creek along the way. If you are hiking with your dog, be sure to have plenty for them to drink too. My pup drank 1/2 a quart of water, licked every puddle we passed and took a nap on a patch of snow! (And he's a little guy-so that is nearly double what he would normally consume.) Bugs were definately an issue. Bring a lightweight long sleeve shirt, wear pants, and a hat. I found that a bandanna was handy too for waving the flying monsters away. Oh and watch out for a small bee's nest that is in the ground at the side of the trail. The nest is probably 3/4 of a mile past the only creek you will cross if you continue hiking the ridge toward Baker. The trail will start to get very brushy and the nest is in that area. Just watch your step. If you push on through, they don't seem to be too aggressive. They are small bees - not yellow jackets. However, my dog stopped walking right next to the nest and got a stinger in his snout. |

Last week we tried skiing here, which was a bit silly, though we did get a few short runs in. Given the great weather we opted for a re-match, this time with hiking boots. There were a lot more cars this week, though it seems that nearly everyone stops at the first viewpoint, so the hike out the Divide was quite peaceful. The views get better and better along the ridge, and the trail's twists and turns serve up many great views during the hike. |

Kris and I hiked this excellent trail through forest to high meadows and a view of Mt. Baker. The trail and the countryside are in great shape, but our big adventure for the day was in returning to the parking lot to find a flat tire. No problem, we'll put on the spare. We have a locking nut and three regular nuts on the tire. When removing the locking nut, the outer portion broke into several shards. This was using a standard jack in the prescribed way. We were now helpless, and just as we negotiated the $150.00 fee for a wrecker to come from Bellingham and tow the car, someone had a can of instant air we could fill the tire with. Thank goodness! We made it home, and right now Les Schwab is banging away at the nut (a several-hour job apparently). Keep this in mind! Thanks to the wonderful people who helped us out with a cell phone, and the air! |

We had originally planned on a camping trip this weekend but with all the wild fires, bug reports and a shaky forecast we decided to stick with a day hike. This trail is a real charmer, it’s short, relatively easy and very scenic. It’s the kind of trail that you would bring along a friend or family member so you introduce them to the wonders of hiking. |

Beautiful trail. We hiked up 4 1/2 miles to the meeting of Skyline Divide with Chowder Ridge. This was well worth the extra time to keep going to the end. You can continue on past this point, but we chose to stop for a break on a peak and turned around. |

Two friends and I hiked Skyline today. It is in good shape. The ranger tried to scare us off with the line, ""There is snow up there."" There is snow, but it is not a problem. A great hike, just go early before the snow turns to slush and make it easier on yourself. Other than that, this is an amazing hike that should not be missed, even if you have to brave a little snow. |

We stopped at the Glacier Public Service Center and found out that the Chain Lakes Loop still had a lot of snow on it, so opted to do this trail instead. This must be a popular trail, as there were about 20 cars at the trailhead on this sunny Thursday, even though the access road is 13 miles of unpaved road and kinda bumpy at times. |

Trail is virtually snow-free up to the first bluff. You encounter a bit of snow on your way to Chowder Ridge, but you can easily do it in boots. There had been thunderstorms the night before, but Baker and Shuksan were not obstructed by clouds in the morning. That changed in the afternoon as the cloudy soup that enveloped the lowlands rose to meet us on the way down. Mosquitos were out but controllable. Pictures at http://photos.yahoo.com/keven_elliff |

The trail is melting out rapidly, but is still covered with significant snow for final 1 1/2 miles. Route finding required at one spot about 1/2 way up. It took us 1/2 hour to find the trail and later we had to help a couple of lost groups. After that difficult patch we were able to keep contact with the trail, although we did hike over significant snow. |

Decided the night before to do this hike, having always wanted to & having a few days free to backpack & camp. Previous report(s) mentioned the overall good condition of the access rd., with some patches of potholes especially in the lower/flatter section. Arrived at trailhead 2pm Weds, parking area full (15 cars). Sunny, warm day, my 40+lb. pack burdened with my photo gear & tripod. The trail is in great shape, but climbs moderately, steadily, in forest until you finally begin to break out into small meadows after a couple miles & within another mile reach a wide meadow/ridge which signals the beginning of the Divide--great, expansive views of the N. Cascades, with Shuksan & Baker dominant. I continued another mile or so up and down some humps on the ridge & found a nice camp off the trail in some short trees, with world-class views of the mtns. to the east & Puget lowlands to the west. No running water on the Divide, so made use of a nearby snowfield. There is no snow on the trail--but lots & lots of bugs! Basically had the whole area to myself from late Weds. afternoon until Fri. morning. Thurs. did a dayhike to the 6563'highpoint further along the trail-- Mt. Baker seemed within walking distance, its glacier-clad slopes gleaming in the clear air. Back at camp had a marvelous sunset followed by a wandering mtn.goat walking by in the dark. Saw a couple grouse/quail, marmot, & many osprey/hawks riding the air currents. Woke up Fri. early for some sunrise photos, hit the sack a while longer & then hiked back down to the trailhead, which took me 1 1/4 hrs. (Took me about 2 3/4hrs to hike to my camp [4 mi]. All in all, a must-do trail, with a mandatory campout in decent weather. |

We headed to this popular trail during the Labor day weekend and expected a lot of people. It was a cloudy day and there were about 20 cars in the parking lot (by the way, the drive up on the dirt road was long and annoying). We started around 11:50am. The walk in the forest was good. We reached the first ridge around 12:50pm and were very pleased to see the awesome views of Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Baker, the latter mostly in the clouds. There were many other peaks in the distance. The bugs were also delighted to see us and we couldn't sit around for long. |

I just have a few things to add to Meganerd's 8/26 report. The trailhead is 3 hrs from Seattle. When the sun was out, the flies and mosquitos come out in full force. They were bad enough that I had to apply Jungle Juice to my bug suit. The trail is 99.9 % snow free to it's end at 4.5 mi. The views are excellent. It was also fairly crowded. The hot tip is dinner at Milano's in the town of Glacier. This unassuming restaurant has outstanding home made pasta and the most garlicy Caesar salad on earth. |
