Great day for a hike on this trail along some spectacular rapids. The trail is easy going and the loop is nice however a little short for our taste. At the bridge junction we stayed left and headed to 4 stream where we ate lunch then headed back. A few trees were down over the trail to 4 Stream but nothing to complain about. When we arrived back at the bridge junction we followed the bridge and completed the loop. Very warm today and nothing but sun!

This was a very easy-going hike along the river. If you love rivers, you will like this hike. Since this hike isn't very long, I would suggest pairing it with another hike within the vicinity.

We drove out to check out the new bridge at Staircase. The rain ceased as soon as we started hiking, so we decided to continue for a few miles on the North Fork Skokomish trail, which is in GREAT condition! There is some debris from recent storms and a few minor blowdowns, but nothing serious.

Definitely hike up the trail on the west side of the river first with nice views of the rapids. From the main parking lot, cross the cement bridge and follow the signs. (The sign to the trailhead by the ranger station is where the return trail comes out.) The new bridge is delightful. The return trail on the east side of the river is wide and easy to walk but has no views of the rapids.
We continued up the river valley on the Four Stream trail. We were able to climb over the small trees fallen over the trail. A cascading stream over the trail with no bridge was a nice place to turn around. |

Big news up the Staircase - the long-awaited bridge to reconnect the loop is in place! Our group went up the rapids trail on the west side of the river, which is in good condition. The new bridge is impressive, a 200' heavy-duty suspension bridge that is higher above the river than the old bridge. We crossed to the east side of the river here, then continued upstream toward Spike Camp. The trail upstream from the bridge hasn't yet been maintained this spring, so there are a number of small blowdowns to cross, nothing difficult, and there's water across the trail in a couple of places. We begin to encounter snow on the trail, & turned back a bit short of Spike Camp after getting into 3-4' snow. The return trail down the east side to the trailhead is in good shape.
We also walked the pleasant Maple Lane trail downstream from the ranger station. Harlequin ducks are in the river along this trail, a lovely sign of spring. THEM, Olympia |

Great hike today at Staircase Rapids. Love that it's now a loop thanks to the beautiful new suspension bridge. The trails were covered with debris from a recent wind storm. We also encountered a few spots of snow and mud. Great day to be out. We saw a few folks, but the parking lot didn't get full until we started eating our lunch around 1pm.

We began our hike on the North Fork Skokomish River Trail. Our GPS said we hiked 4 miles on this trail, but we think we only went a little over 3 miles as we didn't reach the Flapjacks Lake junction. Snow covered 90% of the trail. Traction devices weren't needed, but the snow, debris and trees across the trail slowed our progress. We had lunch at a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the Skokomish River and then returned to the TH via the Staircase Rapids Trail. The BEAUTIFUL, WELL DESIGNED new bridge over the NF Skokomish is completed so now a loop can be done. There was less snow on the Staircase Rapids Trail so until the snow melts, we would recommend hiking the Staircase Rapids Trail to and from the bridge as the views of the rapids along the way are beautiful.

With it cloudy and threatening to rain in Seattle, I thought I would try my luck on the Olympic Peninsula.
I was greeted by the Sun and the road graders, which were filling in the pot holes on the road leading to the trailhead. I was very happy to see this work being done. I met several families at the trailhead, but only one followed the trail along the river with me. The river was running fast and the sound it made was very calming. Though the trail to the bridge was closed; you could see from the river that progress was being made. Work is also being done to clear/fix up the trail. It doesn’t look like it will be much longer before this trail is a loop again. This was an easy hike and I enjoyed this hike along the river very much. |

Road is snow free all the way. Just some bad potholes the last 5-6 miles.
Only saw 3 other hikers. Snow gets a foot deep in places, but it was cool enough that I did not sink so I never used my spikes or snowshoes. Bridge area is cordoned off at end of hike, but you can see the new bridge from the trail before that point - NICE! Finally, the loop will be available again. One downed tree near the start with an easy detour. Video of hike on YouTube: http://youtu.be/hQu2X3wSawk |

Chevy aveo made it to the trailhead. Just be on the lookout for huge potholes and rocks that have fallen onto the road. Didn't wear snowshoes, but micro spikes would be helpful. Trail was covered in snow and is slick in some areas. Be careful exploring near the river a lot of the rocks are slick. The bridge for the staircase loop is still under construction. Not much new to report here except that this was my second HaT hike with my in-laws. They enjoyed Hurricane Ridge so much last week that they requested another hike instead of a day trip to Seattle! We hiked to Four Stream. The trail beyond the rapids is a little overgrown and there are a few wet patches, but the trail is in good shape otherwise. The day started out misty and gray, but the sun broke through shortly after our arrival. The hordes began to arrive in the late afternoon, just as we were leaving. Be careful along the dirt road that leads into the campground area: lots of young people drive out to Lake Cushman to swim and party on sunny afternoons and evenings. They tend to drive way too fast; as such, the park rangers patrol the road.

Trail was in great condition and the weather was awesome today. Hiked this with my wife and 4 mo who hitched a ride in our Kelty kid pack.
The trail is flat and very easy to walk on. Tons of opportunities for some really great photos. Just a few puddles on the trail here and there but nothing that regular shoes couldn't handle. This hike is great for anyone visiting the area because it's easy and you can't get lost. A vert straight forward out and back. Highly recommend this trail to anyone. |

Being July 4th, there were planty of other hikers, but not so many to ruin the experience. Fly fishermen were out in force and the weather was sunny with a nice breeze. Some wildflowers. But the trees and rapids steal the show! |

We decided to take advantage of the decent weather we had and go for a hike to stretch the legs. I decided to ask my eight year old where he wanted to go hike and he said "We haven't been to Staircase in a while." It was decided. We loaded up a daypack and headed out.
We actually didn't hike too far. We went down the rapids trail (toward the Four Stream junction taking the trail to the right after you cross the bridge by the Ranger Station) to Beaver Flats. We took the quick detour to the right along the way to go look at where the old rapids loop bridge washed out years ago, then we headed back to the main trail and continued on to Beaver Flats. We stopped there and had lunch, skipped about a thousand rocks on the river and then headed back to the Ranger Station. Not much of a hike, distance wise, but still a really great family outing. The river rapids are really impressive right now with the spring runoff. There was quite a bit of debris on the trail and a few blowdowns from the winter storms, but nothing of any difficulty to get around or over. There was still a few inches of snow on the trail and several spots where it was very slushy so waterproof shoes are a good idea. Makes me think it's about time to get out my pack and go for a "real" hike :-). |

What a perfect short hike! I've posted photos of some of the magnificant scenery on this trail.
No one else on the trail but us. With the deciduous leaves gone, you get even better views of the river from the trail. We continued beyond the old Staircase Loop bridge site for the additional 1.2 miles to where the four stream trail has to cross a deep stream (no thanks in December, hahaha!) There are a few challenging downed trees to crawl under or over, but not too bad. The Beaver Burn area had some nice views of surrounding ridges you can't see in the summer. |

Today's weather was very rainy. The trail was well maintained, but by the end we did more walking in puddles than dry land. We passed a few people on the trail, but the rain seemed to keep most folks away. Will have to come back & check this trail out again in the summer. This would be a good, easy hike for kids.

Cloudy, 63 degrees. Perfect hiking weather. Very high flows. No snow on trail. About 200 feet of trail covered by blowdown, but easily skirted on the uphill side. Trail stops abruptly about 300 yards before Four Stream - it slid into the river, not sure how long ago, but it's quite a drop off the edge, and undercut. A way trail skirts the slide, and the main trail resumes. Due to the late hour and fading light, did not ford Four Stream.

The trail is melting out nicely. A little muddy, but that's to be expected. Snow gets deep after Slide Camp (3.5 miles in). Postholing is never really that fun, so after going a bit further, we turned back. No tracks in the snow past Slide Camp.

Staircase Rapids trail is one of those hikes that you choose because you want a beautiful "stroll in the wilderness." The drive is long and the miles short, so be prepared to enjoy the scenary without the expectation of bagging a peak. The hiking guides state that the trail is a 4-miles loop, however, over 10 years ago the bridge was damaged and the loop is no longer a posibility. We met a new ranger at the trailhead and he informed us that the planning is on the way to replace the brige, finally making the trail a loop hike. So our hike yesterday gave us 3.25 miles in and out. We stopped at every possible photo op, the Big Cedar, Dolly's Pool, "the bridge," Beaver's Flat, through the Beaver burn area then finally to a rocky spit on the river for lunch. Although it was cloudy in town, the sun was in full force on our hike. This trail is usually crowded, but in the off season it is a pleasant walk - we ran into maybe 15 people. The ranger also informed us that soon the elk will be coming down so wildlife sighting is a possibility. This area usually closes during the winter but will remain open this year. What an awesome idea for a winter hike. If you want to add more miles to your hike, you can add the North Skokomish trail which goes on for miles and miles with little gain. That trailhead is on the right side of the ranger/information center; Staircase is to the left. After the hike, we went into the town of Hoodsport and had ice cream and coffee at Hoodsport Coffee (open daily). Happy Hiking.

OOPS!
We had read about the Staircase Rapids trail in Foghorn Outdoors "Washington Hiking" by Scott Leonard. It says, "the trail starts at Staircase Ranger Station on the west side of the River." Unfortunately, we followed signs to "trailhead and parking" and ended up at a well-signed trailhead saying "Staircase Rapids 1.0 mi" and started off - on the east side of the river. What we didn't realize is that while in theory this is a loop trail, the bridge connecting the east and west sides of the river, and hence the loop, is out and has been out for about 10 years. So we never saw the rapids, nor did we see the Dolly Varden Pool, nor the "Big Cedar" tree, nor the famous old growth forest or the Beaver Burn. Sigh. But we got a nice, easy walk in the woods, there were some big trees, and we did have a snack on big rocks overlooking the Skokomish River before turning back. Make sure you start on the west side of the river, not the trailhead where Wagonwheel Lake starts out. |

This hike is still a great hike for the winter months. With the road closed at the park boundary this will add another 2.5 miles to the round trip. Still a very doable hike for kids. The hike to Four stream was cut short about 150 yards from where it should have ended. Looks like a large slide had occurred sometime in the past and no new trail was created around it. It just ends at the cliff. You can still see Four stream merge with the NF Skokomish.

Day 1) arrived at staircase (1.5mi hike from the closed road to the main staircase campground). The road is always closed in winter so plan on a little walk to get to the campground. We were concerned that our car might be illegally parked because there are a bunch of signs stating that it was for "day use only", but I don't think this is an issue in the winter. Some locals were also parked there just taking a walk and they also said that it was never an issue. We arrived late and so we camped for free in the (completely deserted!) staircase campground. Backcountry permits were available to be filled out and you can mail in payment later. Main toilets and water was shut off but decent pit toilets with paper were open. Don't plan on making a fire if you visit in the winter.
Day 2) The bridge for Staircase rapids is out still, so if you want to hike more than a mile, make sure you are on the east side of the river starting out. We wanted to make it to flapjack lakes but made terrible time (made it about 6miles instead of 8) becasue MOST of the bridges were out and the water level was high. This is what I remember: - TONS of trees over the trail. Don't even bother going if you can't hop a couple feet off the ground with a pack on. - about .25mi in, trail slid into the Skokomish and there is a somewhat scary path you can take around the precipice but I suggest just taking the somewhat not-noticeable path around. - a mile in, there is a decent little bridge made out of a log that has a handrail. - 3 more rivers between 6" and 24" deep, fast flowing current though. We managed to get over all of them by rock hopping and carefully sliding along fallen trees. - The final doozy is the bigger river (forget the name) 2 miles after the turn off the main trail to get to flapjack. The bridge crossing the gulley was smashed by a tree and nearly folded in half. It is still there and you could *probably* cross without dying, but it would be foolish to try. Instead we spent the better part of an hour picking our way down the ravine via a "bypass" that leads to a river 3' deep and flowing fast. Lots of logs to jump across on but not for the faint-hearted because if you fell it would at a minimum be fairly scary and very cold (especially if you are carrying 45lb packs like we were). By this time it was about 3:00 and since it starts getting really dark under the trees at 4 we decided to call it. There was a great little camping spot just on the other side of the river that we called home. Day 3) The way out was much easier because we knew how to cross all of the streams. Took about 4-5 hours to pack the entire distance back to the car (about 7-7.5 miles) including a little lunch break. Overall a great little adventure for a 3-day weekend. Gotta go hiking in the rain more often! Oh, and we didn't see a SINGLE soul on any of the trails, just a couple of people at the car and one guy taking pictures at Staircase campground. |

Group of 5 left Tacoma 7:15a, arrived staircase trailhead 9am, hot day so hiking in mostly shade along river/rapids was fairly cool and few others on trail until our return at about 2pm.
Rapids, waterfalls over large boulders, deep pools seen; a few wildflowers along sandbars. No blowdowns or problems to speak of, until end of main trail about 2 mi in, when trail became difficult to negotiate, we turned around, and had lunch at large sandbar, gorgeous view of mtn across river, ducks, waterbirds, dragonflies. We waded in backwater pool there. Great turnaround place too. This is still a lovely hike, but altho elevation gain is low, 'cumulative gain' much more, so harder hike than was expected, those of us who are fairly short found the high steps over boulders, large roots, etc, quite a challenge, but worth it. |

I woke up at 8:30am and did not want to get up. I’m still a bit ill but I forced myself out of bed anyway. My goal was solitude and for the most part I got it. Hiking in the rain on a Monday is a good strategy for solitude.
I left the gate at about 11:30. The waterfall coming off Mount Rose is very big; the spring melt is in full force. Lake Cushman is low for this time of year because they have started letting more water flow into the Snohomish Valley. It was raining, so I decided to brew my tea and cook my lunch under the bridge just past the Staircase Ranger station. Ah what wonderful quite solitude and then suddenly BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. Someone decided to plow the 1/8th of an inch of snow off the closed parking lot in the closed park on the closed road. This must have been in preparation for April Fools Day. Finally after about half an hour the god awful noise stopped and I got to enjoy some peace and quite. But now I know why the trolls who live under the bridges are so grumpy I hiked 11.5 miles round trip so I could get some peace and solitude and instead I got the noise of heavy construction equipment. I would be willing to wager money that the snow would have all been melted by April Fools Day. I suppose the snow plow driver was having fun though. I had been hoping to see some elk but I assume the snow plow drove them all back into the woods. Quite a few signs of recent road work and a new culvert are in place. Yes the road will open soon then I can hike the trails but will have to leave the dog at home. On the way out I stopped to admire a huge old tree and then I heard the car that the snow plow driver had arrived in so I hid behind the tree until s/he had passed by. S/he probably wondered why they did not see me on the way out. They also probably wondered where I had come from when they first saw me after I came out from under the bridge. My crazy dog had a good long swim in Lake Cushman on the way back. I don’t know how she can stand that cold water, but it gets her clean for the ride home. I finished my hike at about 6:30. 11.5 mile roadwalk http://mosswalks.blogspot.com/ |

I tried this hike a couple weeks ago but the road was closed to Staircase due to SNOW!! We made it this time, and there was no snow, and it was actually quite warm. There were a few patches of snow, maybe a half dozen with one or 2 patches on the trail. I took two women that I work with, who don't hike, and they were amazed at the beauty of the Olympics (and were sore the next day!). It's so nice to share that place with other people! It might be an easy hike, but it's one of the most beautiful places I know of. |

Our small group of Olympia mountaineers started off on a 3-day backpack trip to Camp Pleasant on Saturday morning. We did all our registering and paid for our bear cannisters (they told us the bear wire was down- it is up, but we're happy to make donations to the park). The hike in to Camp Pleasant was beautiful and uneventful. All the bridges are in. That evening we were treated to a little show by a deer and two fawns. The little fawns zipped around the camp area like 5-year olds and mom waited patiently for them to calm down. They didn't seem to be bothered by our presence. A real treat! |

The Staircase area has some snow, but on a sunny day, it was pleasant walking up the north and south side of the Skokomish River from the road end. Normally, I would have walked the loop and crossed the river on the footbridge, but the weather has been very hard on this area, and the bridge has been washed away. So I hiked up and back on the south side, explored a side trail to the biggest fallen cedar I have ever seen, and then hiked up the north side to the bridge washout. It was twice as far as it would have been with the bridge in place, but well worth the effort. You could keep going on the north side to really stretch your legs, as there is only 3 or 4 inches of snow, no need for snowshoes at this elevation. It is worth the trip just for the solitude, which the guru was craving on this gorgeous winter day. There were a couple of minor blowdowns that were easily crossed. Somebody can let us know when the bridge is repaired. |

This, as always, was a beautiful short hike. I had my mother-in-law with us, and a 5 year old, so we just went up the south side of the trail (next to the Red Reef & Dolly Pool) up to a rocky beach just past the bridge (will they ever fix that????). It was a perfect day, and we left the trailhead at 10:30 and didn't run into that many people, considering, until we headed back to the car around 2:00. The bugs were something else, though, I feel like I have the chicken pox, I am itching all over today. My son, however, 10 months old and strapped to my back, has not a mark on him. Mosquitos must not like babies! |

What was I thinking? Planning a winter Mountaineer hike in the rain forest! I just wanted people to get off the couches and hike. And boy was I glad. Although it rained our entire drive to the trailhead, the weather was dry with sunbreaks the entire hike. We started our hike at the Staircase area and were planning on hiking along the North Fork Skokomish to the Flapjack Trailhead. Can I repeat that it was a nice dry hike in the rain forest? The moss-covered trees were so different from our views in the cascades. We started our hike at 10:40 and by 12:00 ran into a water crossing that gave us two choices of getting across. One was to ford the water and definately have wet boots. The water was running fast and the stability of the rocks were uncomfortable for some. The second choice was to walk across a downed tree which hung about 10 to 15 feet above the creek. That was uncomfortable for some, but most importantly, uncomfortable for me the leader. So we lunched at the creek making the decision to stop short of our planned destination. But wait...that doesn't mean our hiking has to end. We ate our lunch and hiked back out with the intention of hiking the other side of the river to Staircase Rapids. And that's what we did. This side is so much more beautiful than the other, and it is a very short hike. We made it back to our vehicles around 3 p.m. and after 8 miles of easy hiking. We ended the day at a restaurant and almost got food poisoning. But that's another story for my Mountaineer friends to talk about on another Mountaineer hike. |

I've been trying to get one of my friends out hiking with me and it finally happened. I invited him and his 7 year old and 3 year old to join myself, another friend and her 7 year old. I chose the staircase rapids area because the trail is easy, flat and very pretty. I gave the kids disposable cameras and memory books to capture their time on the hike. We had a visual scavenger hunt which included identifying the plants and animal scat (if any). I think the girls got into it. The hike itself was beautiful and lush. All along the hike you can either see and/or hear the river that parallels the trail. At one point, we were next to beautiful rapids, but the children were in blissful delight over the ""waterfall"" in the water drainage along the trail. Go figure :-) The 3 year old did great on his first hike...he walked almost the entire 2 miles roundtrip except for when he tripped and needed daddy to comfort him with a ""carry."" We had our lunch break at the bridge and the 7 year olds colored and wrote in their memory books. The wind started to pick up and to get the kids moving we jokingly said a storm was a brewing...let's get a move on. The 3 year old took over and kept us moving by shouting, ""the storm is coming, the storm is coming."" ""The storm"" never arrived and it was a beautiful sunny day the entire day. The only animal scat we identified was the 3 year olds poop that we measured and took out of the forest with us for futher experimentation (to see if the public sewer system works). It was great to have the two 7 year old girls with us to entertain each other, especially on the ride back home. We adults were worn-out. I highly recommend this hike for little children. I am glad we didn't go during the height of the summer season...it can get crowded. |

Traveled up to ole Lake Cushman and the Staircase Campground for a little rest and relaxation, both of which are a little harder to achieve at Staircase this time of year. The sign at the Ranger Station should read: Please turn off your car stereo while you are in the park! Thankfully the primitive dirt road up to Staircase serves to scare off our friends from LowRidersville. Spend a week in the backcountry and then venture into a State or National Park campground and you will know what I mean. Other than that, the campground was in great shape and the rangers were out in force. A recommended car camping trip if you can time it right. |

Due to the nasty weather of the penninsula this year, we finally were able to make it out for our first hike of the season! Staircase has always been a wonderful first-hike-of-the-year outing. We traversed into the beautiful summer day on a fabulous 7 mile hike to Camp Pleasant. The flora and fauna were amazing! There were traces of snow at Donahue Creek(4.7 miles or so in), with rumors of 7-8 feet of snow .5 miles beyond Camp Pleasant. The trip was great, and all of the fallen trees have been taken care of. There's nothing like the Olympics on a beautiful summer day! |

With all of the snow in the mountains I figured a trail with an elevation of 1000ft or so should be snow free. I was wrong. Even with the snow the trail is passable. Hiked up to the burn area and a little beyond. The snow was starting to get deeper and softer (late in the day) so we turned back. It was a pleasant day none the less. It was good to get out into the trees after a long wet winter. The bridge going over the river at staircase rapids has been damaged. It buckled under the weight of the snow at mid span. The bridge was made out of fiberglass. I guess nobody figured on that much snow at 1000 ft. Se ya on the trail. |
