Communities throughout Washington offer a variety of winter skills courses - on snowshoeing, navigation, avalanche safety and winter camping.

Mountaineers

Ridge Explorations

Ridge Explorations is offering free avalanche clinics throughout Washington during the 2012-2013 Winter season..

Free Avalanche Clinics:

Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 7pm: Marmot Mountain Works, Bellevue

The American Institute for Avalanche Rescue and Research

AIARE lists numerous multi-day clinics throughout late fall and winter designed to begin or further your avalanche education.

Guided Snowshoe Walks

Try snowshoeing and experience spectacular scenery while learning about winter ecology beginning the first week of January through March. Snowshoers need to wear layered and insulated clothing, hats, gloves and study, waterproof boots for the snowshoes. The Forest Service provides snowshoes. To offset the costs of the program, a donation of $10 per person is suggested for all tours except the extended hike, where $20 is requested.

Dates for Guided Snowshoe Walks at Snoqualmie and Stevens Passes have not yet been issued for 2012. Check back soon for details.

REI

REI stores throughout Washington and Oregon also offer introductory snowshoeing, avalanche and winter camping clinics.  Click on the store nearest you to see a schedule of upcoming events.

Washington Alpine Club

This club offers a bunch of great snowshoeing and cross-country skiing courses.  Website.
