Beacon Rock earned its name when Captains Lewis and Clark camped in its shadow on their way to the Pacific Ocean in 1805. The rock is an 848-foot basalt column that formed the core of an ancient volcano. It towers over the Columbia River, and its sheer walls were unscaled until 1901-the date of the first recorded ascent of the rock. Notably, that first climb followed the route now covered by the intricate system of paths, bridges, and stairs that make up the trail today.

The hike begins as a gentle walk through the forest as the trail leads hikers around to the southern face of the rock. Then the climbing begins. Traversing and climbing sheer rock walls, the trail is daunting to consider but easy to hike. The ironworks that make up the bridges and stairs are solid and well braced on the indestructible rock face. The trail was built between 1915 and 1918 by Henry Biddle, who owned the rock and all the land about it at the time.

The structures have been repaired, replaced, and reinforced in places over the years, but the trail built by Biddle is the one now used by thousands of recreationists every year. The route covers nearly a mile as it switches back and forth up the rock, but there are plenty of places folks can pause and catch their breath while enjoying the magnificent views of the Columbia River Gorge.

At the top the views are even better, and there is never any question that the climb is worth the effort, for even when the gorge is filled with rain or fog, the view is splendid, wrapped in mists and shrouded in mantles of gray.
Driving Directions:

From I-205 in Vancouver, drive east on State Highway 14 for 30 miles to the Beacon Rock parking area on the north side of the highway. The trail is found on the south side of the highway.

We got to the trailhead around 10 AM and set on up the trail. The hike was steadily steep but not hard. Really just a lot of switchbacks. No issues with the trail at all. Great views of the Columbia River Valley on the way up and from the top (which was pretty crowded). Definitely a nice simple hike that's perfect for families with kids and such.

Beacon Rock Trail reopened for hiking after bridge repairs completed.

The Beacon Rock Trail is reopened to hikers following completion of repairs to fix a trail bridge damaged during a January rock slide. On Jan. 25, falling rock damaged the beams of one of the bridges affixed to a cliff face, requiring the trail to be closed. Dan R. Dalton, Inc., of Usk, was hired to repair the steel beams, and park staff repaired the wood decking and hand rails. The bridge was reopened Friday.

The south face of Beacon Rock is open for technical climbing between mid-July and late January each year.

A little history from Washington State Parks:
The Beacon Rock Trail was constructed between 1915 and 1918, along nearly vertical cliffs of the core of the extinct volcano that overlooks the Columbia. Explorers Lewis and Clark named the rock on their expedition in 1805.

The Beacon Rock trail remains closed due to rock fall destroying a 30 ft. plus span on a sheer cliff. The park recently got a quote for the repair, but hasn't figured out how to fund the price tag yet.

Took my wife and eight year old on this quick little hike Saturday morning. Forecast for the area was in the upper 90's, but we were greeted with a stiff breeze that helped keep the tempature down.

While it's a quick hike, it's a dang fun one! My daughter loved all the switchbacks and little bridges, and the views were incredible. Took us all of thirty minutes to get to the top and we were on a very leisurely pace.
