When will hikers again gain access to Second Beach?

Posted by Andrew Engelson at Mar 13, 2006 04:00 PM |
Hiker and outdoor writer Craig Romano writes on his blog about the the closure of the trailhead to Olympic National Park's Second Beach by the Quileute tribe. The closure stems from a land dispute between the National Park Service and the tribe over boundaries and the tribe's attempts to secure land that's on higher ground out of a potential tsunami zone. It's a tricky issue involving native rights, wilderness and access. One hopes the dispute can be resolved quickly so hikers can again access this fantastic wilderness beach.

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
