Romancing the coast

What could be more romantic than huddling in a tent on the wilderness coast in the middle of a downpour? I'm serious. There's nothing like an early spring overnight to add a little warmth to a relationship.

As Kim Brown writes in the March 2006 issue of Washington Trails, Toleak Point in Olympic National Park is full of things to experience with your significant other: otters on the beach, evening campfires, windswept rocky shoreline, and plenty of seabirds. Headland trails are muddy, and you'll need a tide table to plan your hike, but the wet early spring is a great excuse to snuggle up in the Hubba Hubba.

What's your favorite romantic hike for early spring? Walking the beach? Watching waterfalls? The view from Mount Si? Share your favorites.

Steamboat Rock (May 16)

Steamboat Rock

Eastern Washington

Looking for warm, dry hiking with stunning views and a post-hike swim? Climb to the top of Steamboat Rock and ramble the butte top for dramatic views of Banks Lake and coulee country. Desert wildflowers and camping options sweeten the deal.
