Wild Sky Wilderness clears a big hurdle

Wild Sky landscapeThe proposed Wild Sky Wilderness passed a significant legislative hurdle yesterday, passing out of the House Natural Resources Committee. For several years, the bill creating the 106,577-acre wilderness in the Skykomish River drainage was stalled in this committee and never offered to the full House for a vote. Sponsor Rick Larsen (D-Lake Stevens) hailed the unanimous committee approval, which would send the proposal to a vote. From the Seattle Times:

"We've reached the pinnacle of a long hike," Larsen said after the unanimous vote by the House Natural Resources panel. Getting Wild Sky legislation through the committee "is like arriving at the summit of Mount Fernow (in the Entiat Mountains southwest of Washington's Lake Chelan). I'm looking forward to the celebration at the end of the trail."

The bill has passed the Senate three times before, and the Bush administration has indicated the president will sign the bill into law if it passes. Wild Sky would be the first new designated wilderness in Washington state since 1984.

Red Top Lookout

Snoqualmie Pass

Whether you're camping near Cle Elum or just want a prime picnic location for a short Saturday hike, you'll only have to climb a mile on this steep, easy-to-follow trail to get stunning views from a fire lookout (and cool alpine outhouse). It can be great for kids, but keep them close on the exposed summit.
