Hiker talks about 7,778-mile trek

In July 2005, Andrew Skurka completed a 7,778-mile walk from Cape Gaspe, Quebec to Cape Alava, Washington, becoming the first person to completely thru-hike the transcontinenal Sea-to-Sea route. I have a fascination with thru-hiking, but I have to say--the thought of walking across Minnesota in the depths of winter is not my idea of a great time. Skurka will give a talk and slide show about his epic journey at the Seattle REI store on Sat. April 15 at 1 p.m. Judging from his website, the photos and story should be extraordinary.

Red Top Lookout

Snoqualmie Pass

Whether you're camping near Cle Elum or just want a prime picnic location for a short Saturday hike, you'll only have to climb a mile on this steep, easy-to-follow trail to get stunning views from a fire lookout (and cool alpine outhouse). It can be great for kids, but keep them close on the exposed summit.
