WTA's Thursday Crew on the front page

Posted by Andrew Engelson at Apr 27, 2007 05:00 PM |
A really nice front page article in today's Seattle P.I. about WTA's volunteer program. The reporter spent some time with the "Thursday Crew," including regulars Jim Knoke and Pete Dewell. The article observes that volunteers are now an integral part of trail repair and building on U.S. Forest Service lands. The article noted that Pete's helmet is cracked and faded after 8 years of dutiful volunteering. Maybe we should spring for a new one...although I don't know if Pete would accept a shiny new hard hat!

WTA volunteers have been doing some fantastic work, and last year total volunteer hours approached the 75,000 mark. We'll be needing your help even more this year to repair extensive storm damage (I've recently been compiling a database of storm-damaged and inaccessible roads and trails, and the list is approaching 200 different locations across the state). Click here for more info on how you can help repair trails this year.

As much as volunteers can do, there's still an immense need for appropriated federal funds for our mountain roads and trails. There's at least $70 million in damage out there from the November storm, and there are plenty of projects volunteers can't tackle: from road washout repair to more remote and complex backcountry trail repair. Click here to find out how you can help our efforts to adequately fund our state's trail system.

Red Top Lookout

Snoqualmie Pass

Whether you're camping near Cle Elum or just want a prime picnic location for a short Saturday hike, you'll only have to climb a mile on this steep, easy-to-follow trail to get stunning views from a fire lookout (and cool alpine outhouse). It can be great for kids, but keep them close on the exposed summit.
