Enchantments Permit Deadline Now February 1
Imagine a setting where idyllic pools, bright green larches, and winding walking paths are surrounded by waves of white granite. Where mountain goats frolic and ptarmigans hide amidst the talus.
This is the Enchantments and if it sounds like a pretty swell place to camp to you, you're right. Thing is, plenty of other hikers think so, too. This stretch of the Cascades is so popular that those seeking overnight accommodations have long been required to obtain a permit.
If you're hoping for to score one of the 1,500 overnight permits issued for overnight camping in the Enchantments, you'd better download the application and get ready to apply. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has moved the application deadline up by three weeks this year to February 1 - 8.
If you've never applied before, read the forest's extensive and helpful recommendations before filling out your application. The process is precise. Applications postmarked before Feb. 1 will be rejected, and applications received after Feb. 8 will not be processed until all on-time applications have been considered. You don't want to miss your chance just by failing to apply correctly.
Actually, you should probably read the forest's recommendations no matter how many times you have applied, as they shed some insight into when you are most and least likely to get a reservation. To apply for a trip starting on a Friday in August, you'd better be pretty lucky! Start your trip on a Tuesday in September, however, and you've got a much better chance of securing a site.
With a bit of dedication, a bit of luck, and some flexibility, you might just find yourself camped out with a view of Perfection Lake this summer.
Overnight Wilderness permits, which cost $5 per person per day, are required in the Enchantments, Stuart, Colchuck, Snow, Eightmile and Caroline Lakes area between June 15 and October 15.
