WTA volunteers pitch in to help on National Public Lands Day 2009

This Thursday land managers from every agency that manage hiking trails in SW Washington will convene for WTA’s annual Hiker Potluck. Such a turnout is unprecedented, a sign that WTA’s connection to the Southwest is healthy and growing. Whereas previous potluck events have centered on a theme and featured a particular advocacy topic, this event aims to touch on the highlights from each agency.

In particular, Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Manager Dan Harkenrider will be present to talk about ongoing planning efforts to formalize trails at Catherine Creek and Cape Horn. Brian Poehlein, recreation manager with the DNR will provide an update on the forthcoming Yacolt Burn Recreation Plan. Mount St. Helens National Monument Manager, Tom Mulder will talk about preparations for the 30th anniversary of the eruption; and Gifford Pinchot National Forest Supervisor Janine Clayton will be on hand to answer questions about federal stimulus spending on the forest. Additional special guest include staff from WA State Parks and Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Department.

This event is open to anyone who enjoys hiking trails, meeting new people and great food. Please join us on Thursday October 1st, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Clark PUD Community Room at 1200 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver, WA. RSVP to Ryan at ryan@wta.org, bring your favorite dish to share!
