Spend Your Summer Volunteering
Hey all you volunteers!
Do you have your summer free and want to spend time helping hikers and our trail system?
There are a number of seasonal field volunteer opportunities with the Forest Service, National Park Service and other organizations. If you're a student, or retired, or have a block of time available this summer, consider some of these opportunities:
Holden Guard Station Wilderness Volunteer
The Chelan Ranger District (U.S. Forest Service) is seeking a volunteer to staff its guard station near Holden Village. Volunteer will make contact with visitors on trails, answer questions, provide information and education on issues pertaining to forest and wilderness use near the village. Volunteers collect trail usage data, perform light campground maintenance and light trail maintenance and complete surveys for up to 35 miles of trail.
The volunteer will be stationed in a one-room cabin near Holden Village, a remote retreat center surrounded by the Glacier Peak Wilderness. The volunteer must be self-sustaining in this cabin for 10 days at a time. The volunteer must be able to hike at least 4 miles per day, preferably up to 10 miles per day. Position dates: July and/or August 2008. The volunteer work schedule will be 10 days on, four days off for one to two months. Compensation: $17 per work day for food expenses.
Lyman Lake Wilderness Volunteer
The Chelan Ranger District (U.S. Forest Service) is seeking a volunteer to spend four to eight weeks in a wilderness base camp at Lyman Lake deep in the Glacier Peak Wilderness.
Duties: Make contact with visitors on trails and in campgrounds, answer questions, provide information on special issues, collect usage data. Perform light campground maintenance and light trail maintenance and survey up to 40 miles of trail. The volunteer must be capable of living solo in a wilderness base camp (tent only) for up to 10 days at a time. The base camp is located 10 miles from one trailhead and 18 miles from another. The volunteer must be able to carry 40 lbs in a backpack for up to 10 miles per day with some steep grades. Most of these hikes will be solo as well. WFA or WFR is helpful, but not required. Position dates: July and/or August 2008. The volunteer work schedule will be 10 days on, four days off for one to two months. Compensation: $17 per work day for food expenses.

North Cascades Mountain Stewards
North Cascades Institute, in cooperation with the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, is seeking volunteers to participate in the Mountain Stewards program at the Heather Meadows area and Park Butte/Railroad Grade near Mount Baker. Beginning in July, this stewardship program will train adult volunteers in low-impact recreation skills, natural history and backcountry management issues. Mountain Steward volunteers will travel in these beautiful areas to share information with day hikers, backpackers and climbers.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older with
hiking skills and outdoor recreation experience; mandatory training sessions are
on July 12 & 19, 2008. Volunteers commit to three days of educating hikers
and climbers along the trail, at camps and at trailheads between July 13 through
September 14. At the completion of the three-day commitment, volunteers will
receive a free Northwest Forest Pass.

Mount Rainier Volunteers
Mount Rainier National Park has numerous volunteer opportunities, including the popular Meadow Rover program, which educates visitors about wildflowers and leave no trace principles. Visit the park's volunteer website here or contact Volunteer Coordinator Kevin Bacher at 360-569-2211 ext. 3385.
Volcano Volunteers
Mount St. Helens Institute has an extensive volunteer interpreter program. Volunteeers help provide visitor information on Mount St. Helens geology, the recovery of plant and animal life, and stewardship of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Volunteers will also assist Forest Service and Northwest Interpretive Association staff and sales clerks with visitor center operations and visitor services at remote field sites around the volcano.
