SR 14 Road Closures
Get ready for a major road construction headache on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge this spring and summer. State Route 14 - Washington's only east-west option along the Columbia River - will be closed for portions of almost every day for the next six months.

This project has significant impacts for hikers. The area that WSDOT will be working on is in the heart of hiking country, which will cause significant delays and detours.
Starting March 1, the road will be closed from 4 - 6pm Monday through Friday. The work starts at milepost 53.8, which is where you access Dog Mountain. It will extend over the course of the summer between there and the town of White Salmon at milepost 63.6. There is no detour at Dog Mountain, but there is one at White Salmon.
Beginning June 15 through September 2, the picture gets even bleaker. Between 7am and 6pm, seven days a week, SR 14 will be closed for two hour durations and reopened for an hour in between. It will go something like this:

- 7 - 9am: Closed
- 9 - 10am: Open
- 10am - 12pm: Closed
- 12 - 1pm: Open
- 1 - 3pm: Closed
- 3 - 4pm: Open
- 4 - 6pm: Closed
- 6pm - 7am: Open to a single lane of traffic
Yuck. But hopefully when it is all done no one will get hit by any flying boulders or landslides. These slopes are pretty unstable.
So before heading out for hiking the Washington side of the Gorge, be sure to consult a map and the WSDOT project website to determine what, if any, kind of detour you may need to take. They will have a weekly travel advisory update that should help you pinpoint your route. And you can call 511 or 1.800.695.ROAD from any phone to get updated info on traffic issues anywhere in the state.
