For centuries, local native tribes would gather here each summer to partake of the lands' bounty throughout what is now Indian Heaven Wilderness. They would harvest roots from the broad meadows that cover the areas, hunt the resident deer and elk, fish in the hundreds of small lakes that dot the landscape, and pick bushels of berries. Heaven, indeed.

The local tribes gathered in such numbers that after harvesting food all day, the young men needed some way to challenge each other. So they raced. They raced so frequently and with such vigor that the track their thundering horses drummed into the dirt still exists today. This is the Indian Racetrack.

A still-active lookout tower sits atop Red Mountain, and it is worth a few minutes' delay to hike up to the lookout cabin before beginning the hike. Astounding views of the volcanic landscape of the South Cascades are found from the cabin. Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, and Mount Adams line the horizons. The giant scab of the Big Lava Bed sprawls at your feet to the southeast, and a host of little cinder cones dot the countryside all around-most notably, The Wart to the south, and the crater cone in the center of the Lava Bed to the east.
Driving Directions:

From Carson, drive north on the Wind River Road (County Road 30) 5.6 miles and turn right (east) onto the Panther Creek Road (Forest Road 65). Continue on the Panther Creek Road 11.3 miles to a junction with FR 60. Turn right (east) onto FR 60 and drive 1.6 miles to the junction with FR 6048. Turn left onto FR 6048 and drive 4 miles to the end of the road. Note: This is a one-lane dirt road. High-clearance vehicles are required, and when conditions are wet, four-wheel drive is recommended.

Started on road 65, put in my time in the forest, then emerged into the meadow and well-worn rut which is apparently the Racetrack, where Native Americans raced their horses during the annual fall gathering. I then continued up to the lookout atop Red Mountain with views of four volcanoes. One mosquito.

Since it was such a nice day I thought I'd try to make it into Indian Racetrack never having been there before. I almost made it, turning around at Indian Racetrack Lake instead. The bugs were not as bad as I thought they'd be. Bring plenty of bug juice none the less. The bridge over Falls Creek is missing it's handrail but it's no problem to cross. No snow on the trail as I was hoping but there are lots and lots of rocks and roots to trip over. It's obvious that this trail becomes a pretty healthy stream during heavy rains and spring runoff. There are places where the tread is 18-24"" below the adjacent ground having been scoured out by years of runoff. Some places the tread has become boulder fields and others area just normal tread. All in all it's a pretty non-descript hike until the end.
