Towering and formidable, Mount Index is perhaps the most awesome and fiercest sight and site along US 2. But softening its stark appearance is Bridal Veil Falls. Emanating from beneath the mountain's austere crags, the tiered and tumbling cataract drapes over granite slabs. To really appreciate this plummeting waterway, however, you'll need to leave your vehicle and hit the trail. And in your journey, discover a secret - there's a beautiful lake perched beneath those rugged spires feeding those falls.

Start by following an old road lined with mossy maples and alders. Cross a series of minor tributaries. Pretty in their own right, especially after a storm, these streaming streams are also eroding away chunks of tread. Next, along a thickly forested slope, the trail gradually ascends. At 1.7 miles, just after leaving the old roadbed, come to a signed junction (elev. 1200 ft.). The trail left continues on, heading to "secret" Lake Serene tucked in a deep basin beneath the spires of Mount Index.

For Bridal Veil Falls, head right. The falls is 0.5 mile away. Just follow the roar, using a series of short switchbacks and stairways that steeply climb toward the tumult. Cross several side creeks and expect to get your feet wet. Be sure to pause for a moment or two to look back at the Skykomish Valley spread below. One last grunt and reach the first of two waterfall viewing platforms.

Except for late summer, when the falls trickle more than pummel, the roar should be pretty deafening at this point. Don your rain parka and set out on a drenched boardwalk to embrace the cascade's full force and beauty. Bridal veil? From this proximity, it's more like a bridal shower. Literally soak up the falls beauty. When you've had enough, retreat to the trail junction and make a decision. Back to your rig, or up to Lake Serene?

Serene usually wins, so carry on. Continue on the main trail, dropping a little into a damp ravine. Cross Bridal Veil Creek on a well-built bridge, and then begin climbing. On solid tread that occasionally utilizes stone steps and rock cribbing, the trail steeply ascends. A long sweep east - then a long sweep west - the way works under, over, and around cliffs, gaining 1300 feet in about 1.5 miles. Take in fine views of the valley below as well as out to Ragged Ridge and other peaks of the newly minted Wild Sky Wilderness.

And Lake Serene? It lies just a short distance ahead tucked in a tight basin beneath the ramparts and parapets of fortress Index. Stare straight up those 3000-vertical-foot stark walls. Hardly serene, it's more like awe-inspiring. But when the basin is calm, those imposing rock faces delicately reflect in the lake's surface. Now, that's serene and quite a sight!
Driving Directions:

From Everett, follow US 2 east to the hamlet of Gold Bar. Continue on US 2 for 7 more miles to just before it crosses the Skykomish River (near milepost 35), and turn right onto Mount Index Road. Proceed on this dirt road 0.4 mile, turning right on the spur road signed "Lake Serene Trail 1068." The trailhead and large parking area are 500 feet farther (elev. 600 ft.). Privy available.

Ben, Tim and I planned on camping on the old mining road just before Bridal Falls. We started from the car with our packs loaded and a six-pack of beer in hand. The little rain was nothing to keep us from enjoying ourselves. Ben was in charge of leading us to the campsites as Tim and myself had never been. After climbing up stairs about a mile towards Bridal Falls he then determined that we missed a turn. Good thing none of us were in a hurry. After turning back and finding the correct turn we arrived to our campsite. Ben immediately started to gather wood while Tim and I enjoyed a beer and leisurely looked for good timber. I had packed a 3-hour fire log to help get things started, which certainly did exactly that. After the wet wood started to dry up and our fire grew we began to set up camp. After a few drinks and some stories we headed to bed around 11. The sound of the waterfall was more soothing then my real life ocean noise alarm clock -okay I don’t actually own one, but you get the idea.
Ben woke up just around 7 am and the rest of us quickly followed. After a nutritious breakfast we packed the summit bag and began the ascent to Lake Serene. I struggled to keep up for the first half of the switchbacks in part do to the high amounts of liquor consumption the previous night. We encountered some small bits of snow on the trail once you hit the meadow, which is basically the highest elevation you will ever get to.
The Lake was still 95% covered in snow and ice but you could see the hue of blue through the uncovered sections. We ate our lunch/snack and headed back down the trail. We were fortunate enough to enjoy a little bit of sun on the hike as it burned through the fog. The hike was overall pretty and the volunteer work is pretty amazing. They rebuilt a bridge just last year after the old one washed entirely away.

Brought With: Boots, Trekking Poles, Gaiters and Micro-Spikes.

Recommend Bringing: Trekking poles are about the only thing that was needed to complete the hike.

Left home a little after six to get to the trailhead before the crowds. Arriving a little bit before eight there were only six other cars in the parking lot, PERFECT. Starting off the hike the temp was 45 and my fingers were a little cold the first mile, making me wonder if short sleaves was the best option however once the climb began the coldness disappeared. Turned off to the falls first which was beautiful, lots of water flowing down this time of year. Enjoyed the view all by myself for a good five-ten minutes before heading back down to the main trail. As I kept plugging up the trail it was realized that the bugs were actually pretty light. As arrived near the top, the trail began to get muddy from snow that has melted, I would say between 1/4 and a 1/2 mile from the lake. Then there was some snow the last 200-300 feet to the lake, but nothing to serious. Was able to enjoy the view of the lake all on my own at the lunch rock for about twenty minutes, which was still completely covered in snow, before heading down. On the way down, easily passed 60-70 groups of people heading up with more then a few letting their dogs run around without a leash! Please leash those dogs! The bugs were heavier on the way down, but considering it is in the middle of the woods they were not to bad. Finishing the hike a little before noon, the main parking lot was overun with vehicles and so was the lower lot.

If you waant some sollitude, I strongly suggest arrive 8 or earlier in the morning.

this was my third time hiking. Its one of my favorite hikes. The weather was great and the trail was mainly dry. There were a lot of bugs but no mosquitoes so we didn't have to wear bug spray. We started hiking a around 11:00. The trail wasn't too crowded going up.
At the lake, we didn't go to Lunch rock because there was still a lot of snow up the last staircase. We found a smaller rock that was perfect for the three of us. The chipmunks were surrounding us as we ate which I thought was adorable.
We then saw a dog on the frozen lake running around. I was shocked to that anyone would let their dog out on the lake; especially since the ice was gone in some places. As we sat their longer, a group of people came closer to us. then we watched a guy walk out on the lake; not to mention he was holding what looked like to be a very expensive camera. he continued to walk out further on the lake. then I realized the dog we saw early belonged to this group.
All I will say is that I'm not "ice" expert, but i would not recommend walking on Lake Serene; no matter how thick the ice may look.
Natural Selection I guess.

coming down; the trail is rather narrow so it took longer than normal yielding to the significant amount of hikers coming up.

this is a hike that is def worth doing. Its so beautiful and great views on teh way up as well.

Parking lot for the NW recreation pass holders is plenty but it does get full on a nice sunny day. There were 3-5 cars parked quarter mile away from the trailhead because they didn't have the pass. The hike is beautiful all the way. You start with a green rainforest right from the trailhead which provided a nice cool effect from the sun. Quarter mile into the hike there were WTA volunteers fixing a bridge (You guys rock. Keep up the good work). The hike gets a lot of foot traffic because of the diverse scenery through out. it has waterfalls, rainforest, mountain view at high elevation and a lake at the end.

There is plenty of snow at the last quarter mile. We used our yaktraks to trek the last part and while we were near the lake. Depending on how comfortable you are on snow, I'd suggest yaktrak, poles or good boots. Since the snow is just last section, you can get away with just the yaktraks. Lake Serene is covered in snow as well. But the views were spectacular. Don't get discouraged by the snow. The hike is totally worth it, just be careful on the snow.

Also, not many hikes have these many stairs. This hike should be called Stairmaster trail. After you see the last fall which is 1.5 mile in, the incline begins with hundreds of stairs which makes it a great thigh burning workout. All in all a great day hike. Highly recommend it for a sunny day.
