As sometimes happens on the hikes in the area Mount Baker didn't make an appearance but there are so many other features to see that always make the trek a great experience. For others who are not able to visit the area often I would like the mountain to not to have been obscured. We met a couple of guys from London at the lookout for whom it would have been nice to see the attraction. Clouds and fog drifted along all day. We had a quick view of the very top of Colfax Peak and a small opening revealing a part of the Sisters.
Since last week when I was on Railroad Grade the berry bushes have started to turn to their autumn colors but there are still lots of blueberries to be had along the trail. The trails are in good condition. The Rocky Creek crossing was not a problem-completely dry on both sides of the footbridge, even in the afternoon when the flow was several times higher.
We arrived at the parking lot about 0915 and there were lots of spaces open and the trails less crowded than during the summer although one issue was that most of the dogs were unleashed-maybe that is why we didn't see marmots in some of the usual places along the trail. It was also not good for the horse riders we saw below the lookout whose horses might be spooked in the narrow rocky trail sections.
The access roads are in good condition but there are potholes and wash boarding on about the last two miles of FR-13. The restroom at the trail is well stocked.

Painted the lookout with Skagit Alpine Club! SAC members were on site taking care of end of season upkeep.
No notes on conditions. It was a lovely day. The road to the trailhead is rough but easily driven with care. The trail intersections are clearly marked. There are tons of blueberries on trail. The bushes up near the lookout were the tastiest :)
We did see 4 off-leash dogs that needed better care. Two were separated from their owner and being escorted out by rescuers. Two others were hiking near their owners but were off-trail. Reminder to keep dogs on leash.

Great little day hike up to the lookout. Trail is immaculately maintained, some real elbow work went into keeping it this nice. Meadow section was beautiful, we heard pikas crying out. Not as many people as we expected on the trail. The lookout was being painted today so we had lunch on the rocks outside instead. Mostly cloudy but we caught a brief view of the Easton glacier and Colfax Peak. Great hike, we will definitely be back.

This was a really pretty hike!! My family hiked it in early/mid September in pretty foggy and rainy weather. We got rained on quite a few times, so make sure to bring rain gear if you decide to hike this soon! The trail was very well marked and fairly well traveled, but not too busy. Do be warned however, the app says the hike is 7.5 miles round trip, but we tracked almost 9 miles. This is including hiking all the way out to the fire lookout, which is super neat. While it was crappy weather for us, we still got to admire the beautiful alpine meadows and small lakes. We also saw the glacier peek out for us. Overall a very well maintained hike that I would highly recommend. The road up was also not too bad. There were a few potholes and washboards but you could get up there with any type of car.
