Arrived 0815 on sunny Sunday holiday. Small parking lot about 70% full. Upper trail and drains in great shape (thanks!) - remarkably smooth dirt throughout. A couple segments have heavy foliage, so pants still appreciated. Several viewpoints make this a great experience. Heavy hiker and dog traffic by 12:30 return.

Trail is very muddy from rain. Overall the trail is in excellent condition despite some muddy sections from recent rain. I just discovered this trail on Jan 20, 2018. I did the loop. Then I came back on the 21st and did it again. Some great views when the weather cooperates.
Previous report said best to wear boots. Well, I would agree for most people that is probably the best option. Also, even more important than footwear is trekking poles. There are many descents with lots of mud, and near some seriously sphincter tightening exposure! Poles will be a great aid. I ran the trail in my Vibram Five Fingers. In the summer I do most trails barefoot, but in winter, or other cold conditions, it's VFFs.
