Summary: I hiked a mile past Glacier Basin Camp to the start of continuous snow and trail ran back down. There were mostly climbing groups out at this point. The trail is in great shape overall and makes for a nice trail run due to a fairly gradual incline and smooth dirt. The unmaintained trail past Glacier Basin Camp is more rugged and has some steeper places, but is still easy to follow. Some nice wildflowers are starting to emerge and the views in Glacier Basin are lovely. The trail never felt too crowded on this beautiful Sunday.

I also did the short side trip on Emmons Moraine trail. One not of caution here: there is one switchback after the river crossing that is quite eroded and slippery with some exposure. Proceed carefully here, poles would be useful.

Snow: Snow patches started about 3 miles in leading up to Glacier Basin Camp. Only one was a little challenging to navigate, but none required spikes or poles. No snow past Glacier Basin Camp until the start of the climbing route.

Parking: The lot was full at 7:45 am, with cars already lining the side of the road. However, it was still easy to find a spot about 0.5 miles from the start of the TH. By the time I finished at 11:30 am, spots were more limited.

Stats:

  • Roundtrip distance: 9.35 miles (including short detour on Emmons Moraine trail)
  • Elevation gain: 2,583 ft
  • Total elapsed time: 3:24:19

Posting this mostly with an update that the campground at White River is now open so the regular restrooms with flush toilets are also open.

Trail conditions are basically the same as the excellent report from DRDana 2 days ago, although it is starting to get a bit buggy in some of the forested areas, especially the first half mile or so.

Lots of wildflowers blooming along the trail. I haven’t hiked this trail in June before so it was cool to see some of the earlier season flowers, including huge swaths of bluebells lining a few sections of the trail. Lupine is blooming already in some of the upper sections.

Also I saw a pile of what looked to be fairly recent bear scat along the side of the trail. No bear sightings though.

No line at the park entrance when I arrived at 9:15am and plenty of parking still available. It was overflowing when I left in the afternoon though and lots of hikers heading up as I was finishing.

I arrived at White River Campground a little before 7 AM. There were just a few vehicles parked at that time. When I came back about 1 PM the lot was mostly full, but with some turnover in progress.

Flush toilets at the White River campground are still closed for the season. The outdoor "throne" toilets at Glacier Basin Camp are available and in good condition.

The trail from White River Campground to Glacier Basin Camp is great, with moderate grade, well-maintained, and with numerous pretty waterfalls crossing under. All the bridges are in good shape. Starting about 2.5 miles in, at 5400 feet elevation, snow becomes intermittently unavoidable, sometimes in steep mounds that require careful stepping. On my way up, early in the morning, the snow was firm and easily gripped by my boots. On the way down, around midday and after some light rain, it was a little slushy and more slippery. I got along without extra traction, but was grateful to have poles.

The big meadow at the camp is beautiful, with huge numbers of glacier lilies in bloom, but many more getting ready to bloom later. Many other wildflower varieties are blooming in small quantities. And I saw 4(!) marmots foraging in and around the meadow, plus two near the trail on the way up.

I continued past the "end of trail maintenance" sign at the edge of the camp, about a mile further and up to about 6850 feet elevation. That's not on the glacier, but right now the seasonal snow is still continuous there. I avoided walking over one obvious snow bridge with a stream running under it.

While I saw nobody on the trail during my ascent, on the way down I passed about 2 dozen in various groups. Many seemed headed for the Emmons Moraine trail.

The Glacier Basin Trail was effectively snowfree up to about 5500'.  Thereafter, up to the Basin, most of the trail (mostly the old miners' road) was snow covered and hummocky, though presenting no particularly serious problems to folks with hiking poles.

The bridge over the Inter Fork on the Moraine Trail was in and excellent. The couple of switchbacks ascending above the bridge to the crest of the moraine were eroded, leaving much of that fairly short section of trail quite sketchy.  It needs some TLC from a trail crew.  The rest of the trail was in good shape.
