Volunteer
WTA welcomes everyone who wants to lend a hand and help out on trail — whether you've had years of experience or you're brand new to tools. Find how to sign up for work parties, get details about backcountry trips and find answers to frequently asked questions.
We look forward to seeing you on trail!
Sign up for a Trail Work Party
Search our schedule to find a work party in your area. No experience necessary — just bring boots, gloves, and lunch.
Backcountry Trips
Backcountry trips are multi-day work parties where you and your crew work and camp in the wilderness. There are two types:
- Volunteer vacation - 8 days. Your gear and WTA-provided meals are packed in for you.
- Backcountry response team (BCRT) - These are more rugged. They run 3 - 8 days, and you hike in your own gear and food as well as WTA-provided tools.

Benefits of Volunteering
We appreciate our volunteers — we couldn't do all our great work without you! We reward you with thanks yous, candy, and at certain milestones: swag.
Taking care of trails together
Community Stories
Get to know some of the wonderful people who've picked up a tool and lent a hand on trail, or meet some of the folks who go above and beyond for trails.
Youth Volunteer Options
WTA hosts family work parties and welcomes kids 10 and up to join us on trail with their parents.
We also lead youth volunteer vacations for 14- to 18-year olds.
Volunteer as a Group
Right now, as we're navigating the COVID pandemic, we've paused group work parties. We hope to see you and your group out on trail soon.
Leadership: Meet Your Crew Leaders
WTA has a wonderful community of crew leaders who give their time and skills to helping new volunteers learn the basics (and beyond) of trail work. Read about them, then sign up for a work party to meet them in person!
