It was a great day hike on a busy weekend with just a few others on the trial. Plenty of blue berries to eat that probably won't last. The road to the trail head is narrow with few turn outs. Not sure what would happen if we ran into traffic coming the other direction.

Post Christmas solo hike! Overnight trek to Blue Lake. Lots of snow on the last half mile and plenty of fresh downed trees from the recent storms. solid 8-10 inches of powder up around the lake. Trail was easily navigated for an experienced hiker, however the downed trees and narrow trailway would be difficult for younger hikers.

I haven't seen this noted in recent trip reports, so I'll say it here--the short access road is only suitable for high-clearance vehicles. It's quite narrow, but that's not the problem. There's a center ridge in the road that makes it difficult for sedans to deal with, along with some deep dips. My Prius made it, but suffered the indignities of several bottom scrapes. Of course, you could walk the 1.4 miles to the trail. The incredible basalt canyon wall makes it worthwhile--unique and bizarre rock formations created when a volcano erupted underneath a glacier.
