With all the rain we've been having lately, I knew Coal Creek Falls would be at or near peak flow, so I headed out early and had the trails almost entirely to myself, except for the occasional group of hikers or trail runners. The falls did not disappoint and it was quite the experience being at the falls alone. The trails were in great condition, albeit understandably muddy. This hike is one of my faves.

Exactly the weekday urban hike that I needed! Cannot say enough good things about this collection of trails. Despite the light rain, and last nights deluge, the trails were in excellent condition. Definitely worked up some heat with a hat, hoodie and water proof jacket on. Ample parking - very few folks on the trail (a perk of having an unusual work schedule). Was a bit surprised to see bear (!) and cougar (!!) warning signs at the trailhead - thankfully I did not encounter either.
The trail was well-maintained, had very very few muddy/flooded spots. I would absolutely take OOT guests, children, and deconditioned hikers to this area. The trails were so easy to navigate (thank you for the paper map and perfect sign markers- very consistent). The grade was easy - nice gradual changes in elevation.
If you are interested in learning to trail run - this would be an excellent location to start. The trail is very kind in terms of climbs and descents. Really good footing and tons of flat stretches.
Started at Sky Country Trailhead - Nike Horse trail > Coal Creek Falls trail **WATERFALL!!** > Quarry trail > Indian trail > Far Country trail **scenic view** > Shy Bear trail > Fred's Railroad trail > By Pass trail > Old Man's trail

The photo on WTA must have been in the summer, because the waterfall is miles cooler in real life! A lot more water flow than the photo on here. It definitely exceeded our expectations. We actually hiked a loop, but took this WTA route on our way back. Its very easy. Honestly a very cool waterfall for such a short and easy hike, and so close to the city. Lots of trails in the area, and the map makes it easy to create your own route if you wish. We first went on Red Town Trail, connected to Indian Trail for a short period, then took a left on Quarry Trail (worked up a sweat there!), then onto Coal Creek Trail. Got to the waterfall. Nice big fallen tree to have a snack on. Then exited on Coal Creek then Red Town (this WTA route). Lots of cool history in this area. I can imagine it being very nice in the summer as well with wildflowers. Handful of other people walking the trails. Only about 7 cars in the lot, probably because of the weather. The trail is wide, even the most narrow part is enough for like a horseback rider. I enjoyed it! Much cooler than I expected!
