The trail is friendly for kids. We did a round trip about 3.5miles, and the 3 years old kid did it by himself.

Took our dog out with us today for this short little hike. We arrived around 2pm today to the Red Town Trailhead, and there were several spaces available in the lot. Just follow the signs for Coal Creek Falls, about an hour walk with plenty of stops for busy little pooch noses to sniff and check out all the smells. The trail was SUPER SLIPPERY today, and I really wish I'd brought our crampons or at least trekking poles. There were sections of the trail, especially as we got closer to the falls, where I had no traction at all, and slid quite a lot. It's a miracle I didn't fall down! Saw families with kids and lots of dogs large and small on the trail today. The temperature was pleasant and the scenery was beautiful the entire time.

First walk of 2017 - made a big loop from the Red Town trailhead out Wildside, over Marshalls Hill to Deleo Wall for the view, around on Indian and Quarry cutting back to see the falls on Caol Creek Falls trail then back along Cave Hole and Red Town trails. Total mileage is about 4.7 and gross vertical approximately 800 ft for this lovely little loop. If you haven't done many Cougar walks, pull a map off the King County website, link below. The more popular trails are fairly icy as the snow has melted and refrozen - if you need to avoid falling a hiking pole would be helpful. Side trails are no problem. The Redtown parking lot was a sheet of frozen mud. The views off DeLeo were spectacular to the west - you get a peek-a-boo of the Olympics and Lake Washington around the corner plus the entire Renton Highlands area but Rainier was clouded over. Coal Creek Falls is flowing nicely, (though no icing yet - maybe later this week when it gets colder.) A beautiful winter walk. http://your.kingcounty.gov/ftp/gis/Web/VMC/recreation/BCT_CougarMtn_brochure.pdf
