From Far Country Falls, up and over to Coal Creek Falls, great hike, a little less then 6 miles total in about 4 hours with a couple snack breaks along the way.

We began our adventure on Red Town trail. Leading us through the forest filled with moss-covered trees and fallen leaves. We then took the Coal Creek Falls trail and started to see older trees and growth as we ascended. The trail is in good condition, just a bit muddy but boots should do the trick (a few places in the trail that are completely muddy and you have to step on through- nowhere to go around except up on the growth) We could see the upper falls in the distance and when we got to the footbridge it was beautiful. The falls are flowing at a heavy rate right now and are stunning. We climbed up close to the falls so we could feel the mist, then hiked up to the top where there is a more secluded area where we encountered no other hikers. We rested here and had lunch next to the heavy flowing creek/falls. We climbed back down to the falls and took the other trail that leads you to Frank's a Railroad trail. Took the railroad trail to old mans, old man to sky country and sky country to Military trail to end up at a nice open trail head with a creek and mushroom covered trees. We began at 11:40 and returned to the car around 3:00 hiking just over 5 miles. A wonderful way to spend MLK and a beautiful winter day!

First hike of 2016 - and what a perfect day for it! I wasn't the only one who thought so... the parking lot was full when I arrived shortly after 11:00. My brother-in-law and I did about 4 miles - up Cave Hole Trail to Fred's Railroad Trail, and then down Coal Creek Falls trail. The trails were well maintained, the cave holes were interesting but not as impressive as I expected, and the waterfall was beautiful.

Parked the car just off Lakemont Blvd SE. Thought the car park was pretty full at 10:30 am but many more cars managed to fill it up before returning at 2:30 pm. Better to get going in the morning it seems. We took the red town trail to the quarry trail via the Indian trail, up to the coal creek falls the back on the quarry trail to the east fork trail via Fred's railroad trail, past the grate on the mine shaft trail onto the clay pit road and had lunch at the abandoned clay pit. A great walk up the mountain with many sights from the waterfall and frost flowers to a whole range of mushrooms, some quite old. Felt surprisingly out in the wilderness with busy but not crowded trails. A lot to see out there. There is nothing left at the old nike missile installation save some concrete, an open field and an abandoned concrete hut. Returned to the car via cave hole trail. This trail was much less interesting. The cave-ins and warning signs were of brief interest. Had a great day out overall! Factoring in how close and easy to get to it was, this was a great hike. A good option for late starts, when you don't have snowshoes or if you've never been!
