Beware of: trail conditions

Parked in the lot off of 60th Street, and walked to the first intersection. It seemed that the route across the road was closed. I would not return to this section of the trail because there is so much traffic noise. We also did not see any coal industry remnants. I imagine the Red town starting point would be more interesting and peaceful.

We parked in the Red Town trailhead parking lot and saw a number of people coming down and heading off to the different trails at the base of Cougar Mountain. Easily crossed the street and found the trailhead for Coal Creek just as described. The trail was in surprisingly decent condition in light of the fact we were hiking in substantial rain showers that only increased as we made our way. There were definitely soft, slick, and sometimes total puddle covered paths along the way, however the majority of the trail has been continued to be maintained quite well making it easy to keep a good pace. Watch your step though on all the built in wooden bridges and steps as they were quite slick. Of note is that a lot of the side loops along the way are currently closed, so if you are starting off on Coal Creek looking for a number of side trails to take that is not an option at this time. Overall, really enjoyed the fact that we saw only two other people the entire time heading out and back on the trail - very peaceful. Overall a nice 2-3 hour escape from the city with my wife.

The hike was a easy day hike only took a few hours. If you keep a good look out, you will find treasures . I found a old 65' chrysler turbine tucked away hidden off themain trail. Finding that made up for a really good hike.

This was a really fun, easy hike. Some stretches were muddy, but overall it was sunny and dry. We parked at Red Town and walked across the street to the Coal Creek Trail. Very soon after starting we saw a hole where a coal mine used to be. It was neat to look in, but only went to a depth of maybe 10 ft. It appeared to have been sealed. Other highlights included coal on the ground, waterfalls, a car and a metal roof in a field, wooden pedestrian bridges, a train wheelset a tree, and skipping rocks in the stream. We hiked the whole trail and back in about 2-2.5 hrs, and it was pretty flat and well-maintained. We encountered probably 20 other hikers in passing.

Trail is very well maintained, there were some areas of mud going toward the falls. The trail head had maps of the area you can take with you, and all of the trails are well marked. There are many different paths you can take. Fun day!
