Arrived at the Upper Coal Creek West Trailhead at 4:30pm on Tuesday. Only a few vehicles in the parking lot so plenty of open parking. There is one portable toilet that had some toilet paper remaining. We hiked to the Red Town trailhead and back, adding the interpretive trail and primrose loop on the way back. Only a few people out on the trail this afternoon. We were back to the car at 6:30pm.

We started at the west end of the trail, opposite of what is in the description for this trail. Lots of greenery, very pretty creek with waterfalls and rocks, and lots of places you can go down to the water. There are signs explaining the historical significance of the trail. It's all in a big canyon near neighborhoods but feels more remote. The trail was in pretty good condition, though there was places with mud. It rained today, so in the open spots on the trail, we got a bit wet, but under the trees, it wasn't too bad. I did enjoy reading the signs and learning more about the history of the area. The waterfalls and flume were neat to see, and I would enjoy coming back to this area in warmer weather. Overall, a very neat trail!

There is one tree across the trail and it is muddy in several spots, other than that the trail is in good condition.
There are a couple of waterfalls along the way, they might be seasonal.
There are not any views along the trails but there are signs explaining the history of the area.
This trail is not a loop, and there are trailheads along the path. You can park one vehicle at one end and other at the other end.

We've got fog in the forecast for the next several days, so I figured a hike in the woods along a creek would be nice! I rolled into the Coal Creek Natural Area trailhead around noon, and the lot was full except for a few spots. I began at the Upper Coal Creek Trail West trailhead and followed the signs for Red Town, and as others have mentioned, the signs make everything pretty straightforward. There was one downed tree over the stairs on the trail, but it was manageable to pass. I wore my boots because I knew the trail would be muddy and slick in a few spots, but you could probably get by with sneakers. Overall, it was a lovely little jaunt in the woods, and I really enjoyed the interpretive signs as you get closer to North Fork Falls and the coal shaft.
