Craft Island

Take a short hike to a Skagit county gem, which offers views of the Skagit flats and the bay, as well as the Cascades to the east, the Olympics to the west, and Rainier to the south. Your destination is Craft Island; a rocky outcrop in the flats at the edge of Skagit Bay. There even is a little beach where the four- and two-legged visitors can swim at high tide.

But be warned. It's a mucky walk to the beach. While you can enjoy a swim in surprisingly warm water at your destination, expect to get a little dirty on the walk in. But that's what comes with going outside, right? 

From where you park your car (there's no formalized trailhead), cross a dike and begin walking towards Craft Island, visible in the distance. While it may seem easier to head straight for the island, refrain from doing this. Cutting across the flat marshland is risky due to ditches and holes that could result in twisted ankles. Instead, enjoy your meandering route, looking at the trailside flora. Balds and lichen similar to those found in the San Juan Islands make the island seem even more remote than it is. 

Once you reach Craft Island, climb up a rocky outcropping and follow the route through a small grove of trees. Once through this, you'll pop out on the other side of the island, and be rewarded with gorgeous, expansive views of the Olympic mountains. 

Turn all the way around to get the full effect. Views of the Cascades and the islands complete the picture. Enjoy your time here and then head back the way you came; there's no camping allowed at Craft Island. Note also that there are no toilet facilities or drinking water. Bring what you'll need, and take care of any bathroom needs before starting your hike.
